...how fitting that precisely when I am writing a post about updated geohazard, geophysical and geotechnical guidelines for #offshorewindfarms, I am experiencing a 4.2 magnitude #earthquake here in Southern #California. 𝗕𝗢𝗘𝗠 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹, 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗵𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: ☑ The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM)'s 2020 "Guidelines for Providing #Geophysical, #Geotechnical, and #Geohazard Information," primarily focused on the Atlantic Outer Continental Shelf (OCS), have been updated to address the unique challenges within the #Pacific and #GulfofMexico OCS. These updates encompass considerations for potential geohazards that might impact areas beyond the boundaries of wind farms, such as (just some examples): ◻ slope instability; ◼ turbidity flows, and; ◻ effects of seismic activities like liquefaction and slumping. As you can imagine these are critical for adequate offshore wind farm project design. See below (🔷) for BOEM's summary of changes. 🌊 The process of seabed characterization is crucial for offshore wind farm developers. It enables the acquisition of essential information about the subsea surface and subsurface. This task is complex even in more shallow waters with fixed bottom foundations, but it becomes significantly more challenging in deep waters and in regions with geological faults, such as those in the Pacific. Fugro, having established its presence in California since 1970, has developed close ties with local agencies and possesses the expertise for assisting developers with designing offshore wind farms in challenging deep-water environments and Geologically hazardous areas. 🔷 Key amendments in the updated guidelines, as outlined by BOEM, include: 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: This section combines information previously in an associated appendix and describes three recommended sequential phases: site reconnaissance, suitability assessment, and site-specific design. Clarification has been added to distinguish that site investigations pertain to data collected. Site characterization refers to analysis and interpretation of data.  𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆:  This section has been modified to align with the phased approach described in the Site Investigations section. Great to spend a few days in #Oslo for the DNV organised JIP on Ground Investigations for Floating Turbines (#GIFT). It was really good to have some insightful discussions with industry representatives and gain alignment on how we take a more pragmatic approach to #siteinvestigation going forward - ensuring we strike the balance between #cost, #risk and realistic delivery #programme. This is a much needed step change in industry approach when you consider the amount of #geotechnicalinvestigation that would otherwise be required for projects which may have 100s if not 1000s of anchor positions. A big focus related to the ability to infer #geotechnical properties from #geophysical datasets (e.g. #seismicinversion) and the use of quantitative #groundmodels. A challenge for the industry will be ensuring that early-stage surveys are targeted towards proving the feasibility of these state-of-the-art techniques such that confidence can be gained for site specific ground conditions. This along with clearly defining how uncertainty will be dealt with statistically and how geotechnical design profiles are developed based on this information.
