As we reflect on 30 years of democracy and commemorate the Sharpville massacre of 1960, it's important to remember that human rights are essential to achieve sustainable development that must be inclusive. Human rights are the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. Today, let's also recognize Down Syndrome Day, marked each year on March 21 since 2007. Down Syndrome or Trisomy 21 is a condition in which a person has an extra chromosome. About 1 in every 800 babies will be born with Down Syndrome, and it occurs naturally with no known cause. The 21st of March was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. It's important that we end our own biases and stereotypes on neurodiverse conditions such as Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders, etc. Let's strive for a more inclusive world where everyone is valued and respected. #HumanRights #Inclusion #DownSyndromeDay

We recently had our Strategy 2023-26 Launch in Derry, with our vision being 'a fair and equitable society for everyone'. This strategy highlights six Priority Initiatives that we aim to address. We support a wide range of causes, and, where we can, we will aim to co-ordinate our funding around Priority Initiatives. 5 - Social Justice We will: Broaden our Human Rights support and continue to advocate for and give greater voice to those most marginalised in our community. For my New England and Upstate NY friends, the Collective Power for Reproductive Justice Conference is in Amherst, MA this year on April 12 and 13! The program states, "This year’s conference theme will explore ways of organizing, connecting, and cultivating practices that center impacted communities, foster collective resistance, and practice community care. How can we exercise creativity and art as tools for resistance? What can we learn from one another in our different movements in the pursuit of our collective liberation? We will explore these questions and more with panel discussions led by advocates, activists, artists, and healers from communities most impacted by reproductive injustice."

💡NEW AYJ REPORT OUT NOW💡 📣 Our research calls for action to ensure as racially minoritised young people turn 18, the ‘by and for’ voluntary and community sector (VCS) is there to support them - bridging gaps in statutory services and guiding young people to brighter futures. ❗️Young people turning 18 in the justice system face a steep cliff edge. The research raises concerns that for racially minoritised young people, deficits in support – due to harsher treatment and a lack of appropriate skills and resources - compound the impacts of the cliff edge. 🤝 The transition to adulthood is a pivotal point. With the right support in place, it could be an opportunity to address childhood experiences and prevent inequalities widening. The VCS, particularly organisations led by and for racially minoritised communities, has a vital role to play: addressing shortcomings of statutory services, providing tailored, authentic support, focussing on empowerment and fostering trust and engagement. 📣 The report calls for policy change to break down barriers in funding and commissioning systems that exclude smaller, specialised community organisations, to ensure age-appropriate, culturally relevant, and strengths-based support is available to smooth the transition to adulthood and address racial injustice. Today we hold space for the joy and sorrow that Juneteenth ushers in. We are joyful in our celebration of freedom and we are sorrowful in remembering our nation’s long history of oppression, violence, and discrimination. Youth health professionals: you are uniquely equipped to help youth navigate the complexities of Juneteenth and engage with them in challenging topics about racism and discrimination. Research shows the long-term effects of discrimination are serious. Youth who experience discrimination face higher rates of other risk factors and increased risk behaviors compared to the general population. Being an ally to minority youth means understanding the social determinants of health that are impacting them and advocating for the interventions that will support them.
