Who loves the human and natural capital footprint of mined diamonds? The movie Blood Diamond scared me for life. So when I saw that the carbon footprint of lab-grown diamonds is steadily declining, I started to see a “better” product. One manufacturer claims to emit just 9kg of carbon per 1-carat stone. To put this into perspective, the carbon footprint of a diamond is less than that of a single steak at a dinner proposal and likely less than 0.1% of the carbon footprint of a honeymoon. I went on Blue Nile today and saw that I could buy the same lab-grown diamond for 1/10th of the cost of a “natural” diamond. I was “shopping” in the 3-carat range, and I am not getting married again.  If we found a copper substitute that costs $1,000 a tonne with a minimal natural capital footprint, I can assure you that copper mining would be obsolete. During our discussion on Tuesday, we delved into the environmental impact of mining, particularly the misconception about carbon emissions vs local ecological legacy. Why would I mine if I can get the exact stone for a fraction of the natural capital footprint?  So, I understand Anglo American’s decision to “sell” De Beers Group and can see why BHP is not interested in buying it.
