Completed my 3-month internship with The Straits Times! 🎉 In the beginning, I thought that for the most part, journalists have to be good at writing. But it wasn’t long till I learned that the job had more to do with communication than writing to flaunt or impress. After all, what use is text if no one can comprehend it? Whether it was conducting interviews with an open mindset, pitching article ideas, or writing concisely, it mostly boiled down to communicating well with different people. I wouldn’t say I was able to achieve perfection all the time, but I’d like to think I moved closer to professionalism with each passing day. Being in the courts and crime team, I sat in hearings at the State Courts, and covered fires and scams. However, my experience also extended to finding out about consumer behaviour from different angles, digging through years of information to extract patterns, and working in larger teams to report on the Tanjong Pagar structure collapse, Tharman’s presidential bid, and Tan Chuan-Jin’s resignation. I’m grateful to my editors, seniors, and colleagues who gave me so many opportunities to grow and trusted me to produce quality work like a full-time journalist, always supporting me when I chased different stories. Regardless of where I go in the future, this journey has been such a fruitful one that I can apply in various contexts. I’ve still got many perspectives to broaden, and so many unpolished skills to continue honing! ✨

There's a word I run into frequently when I edit at Caplin News that I almost always take out: Educate. "Adults who attended the event were educated on how to plant trees." How does this sound to you? To me, it sounds condescending. It implies that there was a superior group and an inferior group; those who do the educating and those who were educated. What if I'm a reader who doesn't know how to plant trees? How would reading this make me feel? I'd feel insulted by the reporter and the outlet. I don't need to be patronized. One of the things I learned in my internship at the Miami Herald is to put the audience first. One of the last things I want to do is insult readers. So, what do I do as an editor? I opt for "teach" and "learn." "Event organizers taught participants how to plant trees" or "people who attended the event learned how to plant trees." Hear the difference? While "educate" might've been factually correct because it was, technically, an educational activity, writers have to be mindful of tone as well. Word choice goes a long way. What do you think? Do you agree? Or am I being picky?

What prepared you for a career in content writing? ✏️ My journey into content writing was shaped by a combination of educational background and practical experience. A degree in "Marketing" provided me with a solid foundation in creating content, while hands-on projects and internships allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Additionally, my passion for writing fueled my desire to craft engaging and informative content, honing my skills for a career in the dynamic field of content writing.

“Advice for the Intern” ep 11 📽 I had a great conversation with Gorilla 76 Senior Writer Mary Tomlinson about pursuing a passion, a career, and finding the balance between them — and I wanted to share her story and my biggest takeaways with y’all. Uncertain about which direction she wanted to take her career, Mary made the decision to step back from Gorilla and pursue freelance writing full time. While she said having a mentor to help her “course correct” would’ve been helpful, she also stressed the importance of trusting your gut. After a year of exploring that career path and learning more about her career goals and preferences, she decided that working at Gorilla again was the right fit for her. Mary is back at Gorilla now, and she’s here with the knowledge that she did explore that passion and confirmed that this was where she wanted to be. I love this story, and it reminds me of a famous Mark Twain saying: “If you must be regretful, regret what you didn’t do, not what you did.” That voice in the back of your head saying “what if” to a possibility never explored is a gnawing one. While taking that leap may seem daunting, I find that  you learn more about yourself and where you want to go… …leading to a more resolute decision on which direction you choose to take. My first job was as a sub-editorial intern in a monthly magazine. One of the key things that I learned in my job was just how important paying attention to detail is. Seriously. They aren't kidding when they mention 'detail-oriented' in their JDs. A good copy can fail simply because of a missing oxford comma. If you are still in J-school or gearing to enter the media and communications industry, master the skill of being obsessed with details. Because the untrained eyes of your target audience notices when those details are missing; even if they can't quite put a finger on what's wrong. The most creative people in the world are the most anally retentive.
