“In essence, my research area is about finding solutions for sustainable and affordable aviation. More precisely, the aircraft of the future is the focus of my application-oriented research area”, explains our colleague Daniel in an insightful interview, portraying him and his work. 👨🔬 ✈ Daniel Silberhorn is one of the roundabout 60 research assistants from our DLR Institute of System Architectures in Aeronautics and he specialised in overall aircraft design and integration. Airbus To Pick Hydrogen Propulsion System In 2025-26 ‘As Airbus is progressing with studies and tests around two different hydrogen propulsion systems—a modified turbofan and an electric motor associ- ated to a fuel cell—the airframer is planning on selecting one of them in 2025-26, CEO Guillaume Faury said Feb. 15. Under Airbus’ #ZEROe hydrogen project, a relatively small commercial aircraft would be ready for entry into service in 2035. “Fuel cell test results are fueling our optimism in this technology,” Faury said, speaking at the company’s annual press conference. He thus suggested fuel cells, after having been the less likely option, are now on a par with hydrogen combustion. In 2025-26, Airbus’s plan is also calling for finalizing aircraft specifications in capacity and range. The research and technology program schedule, however, has yet to be clarified. The first flight test of a GE Aerospace Passport engine—adapted to #hydrogen—on a modified A380 is planned for 2027. That would be after the choice for a propulsion system. Moreover, that first flight would be very close to the planned program launch in 2027-28. The first hydrogen-burning Passport is slated for ground tests in 2025 utilizing gaseous hydrogen. A second engine will see a transition to liquid hydrogen (#LH2). Meanwhile, a 1.2 MW #fuelcell successfully powered electric mo- tors in late 2023. Built for testing purposes, the so-called iron pod contains the fuel cell system, the electric motors needed to spin a propeller, and control and cooling units. The iron pod represents the power needed for the commercial aircraft Airbus envisions. In a six-propeller configuration, fuel cell engines may be able to power a 100-passenger aircraft with a range of approximately 1,000 nm, according to the airframer’s calculations. Flight tests on a modified A380 are scheduled for 2026. The turbofan option is the lighter-weight one, while a fuel cell is more efficient. “We will keep working on those two streams for a few years,” Faury said. “I am confident with the progress we made over the past years and what we need to achieve in the next years until we come to program launch.” ZEROe and the next-generation narrowbody are two different projects, Faury em- phasized. “ZEROe is about bringing a hydrogen aircraft to the market, at the low end of market,” he said. “It will not compete with the rest of our product range. Aeronautical engineers do not always add engine power to make the plane fly faster. They make the plane lighter and design it to have less resistance or friction so that it can flow with the momentum that is already present. Planes this way fly faster and consume less fuel. What is true of the plane can be true for us. Sometimes less is more, more is less. Good round-up by Jonathan Hemmerdinger at FlightGlobal of test progress for the CFM International (CFM) RISE open-fan engine. GE Aerospace engineering VP Mohammed Ali says that testing by CFM partner Safran shows the design will deliver “significant fuel-burn improvement” and be more durable. Ali adds that conventional turbofan architecture could only be 20% more efficient if its core burned at “half the temperature of the sun’s surface”.
