  • Dale Tutt asks '✈️ And is there a future for hydrogen powered aircraft? I think so, but still has many hurdles in aircraft design, airport infrastructure for hydrogen. But it offers clean emissions, and can be a key to bringing fuel cells to aircraft with electric propulsion.' We HyFlux have a solution for longer range, and more efficient True Zero emissions and look forward to seeing how Siemens may collaborate to develop a solution for the future of #SustainableAviation. After a busy few weeks of travel that took me to Zurich and then to LAX, I sat in the LAX airport waiting for my flight and I found myself thinking about how the flight I was about to board, minutes later, was so different from the ones I was boarding a few decades earlier. And then I got to wondering about the flights I will be boarding in the future, only a few decades from now. What will be different? The innovations, and expectations, for the airline industry are going to result in easier and more sustainable air travel, and will transform the customer experience at the airport. Some of the innovations I am most excited about: ✈️ Electric air taxis that offer the opportunity to fly above the gridlock to and from the airport, saving time while being more sustainable. ✈️ Electric regional powered aircraft that provide sustainable, zero emission solutions for regional travel. A possible game changer for the multitude of short range flights that dominate domestic travel. ✈️ Blended wing body airliners, a technology that has been around for a few decades but is now coming forward as a revolutionary solution for air travel and airport operations. It offers the potential for fuel savings of over 50%, and will revolutionize gate operations by providing much faster time to board the aircraft. ✈️ And is there a future for hydrogen powered aircraft? I think so, but still has many hurdles in aircraft design, airport infrastructure for hydrogen. But it offers clean emissions, and can be a key to bringing fuel cells to aircraft with electric propulsion. One thing is certain, the face of air travel will be much different in the near, and not so near, future! Many of these innovations require a new way of doing business to bring the ideas to life - in engineering, manufacturing, and operations. Digital transformation is being embraced by the companies that are working on these revolutionary aircraft, and the Comprehensive Digital Twin is at the center of the digital, and air travel, transformation. We certainly live in exciting times of transformation in an industry that touches so many of our lives!

  • “We broke down that question to ask, ‘What are the elements of hydrogen that we might take advantage of?’” Neil Terwilliger continued. “We’ve got heat recovery. We’ve got #superconducting power electronics with the cryogenic temperatures, and we’ve got the fact that it produces a lot more water vapor when it burns, which is a somewhat obscure factoid, but we can use that. It ends up being the thing that really enables us to catch water from the back of the engine.” #Cryogenic #Hydrogen #LH2 #SustainableAviation

  • Joby Aviation’s Hydrogen-Powered Future: Transforming Regional Air Travel When it comes to the future of air travel, Joby Aviation isn’t just thinking short distances—it’s aiming to connect entire regions. In July 2024, the prototype S4 eVTOL, modified for hydrogen-electric propulsion, completed a record-breaking 561-mile flight—an impressive sixfold increase over battery-only performance. The secret? Hydrogen fuel cells. “Fuel cells are the key enabler because they make the best use of hydrogen and electric,” said Raffaele Nicholas Russo Joby’s business manager for new technologies. “Fuel cell development for all applications—maritime, ground, energy storage and aviation—is progressing quickly. There is definitely an inflection point in fuel cell supply. There is a lot of development happening that will make fuel cell-based aviation easier and easier.” These advances unlock a cruise speed near 200 mph, enabling seamless city-to-city connections like New York to Boston. But as exciting as this sounds, Joby acknowledges the hurdles: • Infrastructure: #Hydrogen refueling and safe storage require dedicated facilities. • Regulations: Industry rules are still catching up to the technology. • Public Perception: Hydrogen #safety concerns remain top of mind for communities. Despite these challenges, the potential is immense. Hydrogen-powered eVTOLs could slash travel times dramatically, making trips like Los Angeles to San Francisco downtown-to-downtown in just over two hours. For Joby, it’s not just about longer flights—it’s about rethinking how we move between cities entirely. P.S. Would you choose a vertiport over an airport for your next trip? (Feel free to reshare if this inspired you.) #SustainableAviation #EVTOL HYSKY Society™
