As a coach, one of the things I am always challenged with is getting the ideas in my head into the bodies of the athletes that I work with. I find breaking things down into a common language and explaining the value in the eyes of the athlete to be very important. A very simple movement like walking up-stairs is something that most of us take for granted. That is, until we are in pain and can’t do it anymore. A good step up, while simple in concept, actually involves about a half dozen pretty important elements that we can position, strengthen, and make more efficient. When present, these elements make up a flawless movement, healthy joints, and a healthy body. When not present, we risk frequent microtraumas which have a stress effect on the body in the long run. The same underlying efficiencies are true when we lunge, run, swim, or play sports. Former Client Win! The point of a short term program should be to set the client up for success after the fact! The results you can get will be capped by the amount of time no matter how good or “optimal” the program is. Teach people how to be self sufficient and independent with their fitness as best as you can. There’s always a benefit to having a coach but you shouldn’t always NEED one.

Train with integrity. Set yourself standards. Don’t cheat on your reps or the quality of your effort. Be the best you can be. Train the same way by yourself as you would in front of an audience or with a partner. It’s the manner of the work you put in that matters more than how fast you did it or the amount you achieved. It took me a long time to learn this. When we train with integrity, we don’t cut corners or drop our standards when the coach is looking the other way or if no-one will ever find out or if we want to be faster than someone else. Integrity upholds a set of values we have set for ourselves.
