November 30, behind closed doors, the Supreme Court of Russia reviewed an administrative claim submitted by the Ministry of Justice and officially recognized the international LGBT movement as an “extremist organization”, and prohibited its activities in the country. There was an article in the medical journal The Lancet “Experts warn of health harms of Russia's anti-LGBT ruling”: https://lnkd.in/dj3frs2y This text describes the latest anti-LGBT laws that have come out in Russia and their impact on the rights and health of LGBT people. Our experts also commented on the impact of the ruling on the sexual health of LGBT people: “We know that HIV thrives when human rights are violated. But the new Russian legislation sends a direct message to the LGBT community: don’t dare speak about your rights, don’t dare speak about yourselves at all…State-induced homophobia and transphobia will force LGBT people further underground. I’m afraid this will prove itself to be an almost insurmountable barrier in the fight against the HIV epidemic among LGBT people in Russia”, Vitaly Djuma, Executive Director of the ECOM, told The Lancet. Nikolay Lunchenkov MD, MSc, LGBT Health Coordinator, added that, under the new law, providing HIV-prevention services to LGBT people would effectively be outlawed: “The organisations that were providing HIV services to key populations will be closed down very soon. The services they provide are not banned, but such organisations cannot openly say that they work with men who have sex with men and transgender people. Under the new law, it could be considered as support for extremism”.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦: 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟓𝟔𝐭𝐡 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 By Laraib Ahmed / GICJ Racism remains a persistent global issue, as highlighted in the recent 56th session of the Human Rights Council. On 8 July 2024, Special Rapporteur Ms Ashwini presented critical reports addressing contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related intolerance. Ms Ashwini's reports focused on three key areas: systemic racism in the United States, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in promoting racial hatred, and the dangers of glorifying Nazism and neo-Nazism. Her visit to the US underscored the deep-rooted nature of systemic racism, urging the need for reparations and sustained efforts to achieve racial equality. In her AI report, Ms Ashwini stressed the urgent need for regulations to prevent AI-driven racial discrimination, highlighting its impact on marginalised communities. The third report called for enhanced legal frameworks and public awareness to combat the resurgence of Nazism and related ideologies. The dialogue saw active participation from various countries. The United States reaffirmed its commitment to racial equity, while the European Union introduced measures to regulate AI. Türkiye raised concerns about Islamophobia, and China and South Africa discussed the ethical implications of AI. Furthermore, countries like Pakistan, Libya, Egypt, Kuwait, and Algeria highlighted the extensive discrimination and targeting of Palestinians, emphasising the urgent need to address these injustices. 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 (𝗚𝗜𝗖𝗝) remains steadfast in advocating for robust measures against racism and discrimination. We commend the Human Rights Council for facilitating these vital discussions and call for immediate action to address these pressing issues. However, we must express our grave concern over the lack of progress in the current political atmosphere, where ethnic, racial, and religious minorities are being increasingly targeted across the globe. From Muslims in India, to African Americans in the United States, the rise in discrimination and violence is alarming and unacceptable. We urgently call upon the international community, governments, and all relevant stakeholders to intensify their efforts, implement effective policies, and ensure accountability to combat these pervasive injustices. It is imperative that we unite to protect the rights and dignity of all individuals, regardless of their background. #Racism #AI #SpecialRapporteur #Regular_Session #56th_HRC #Islamophobia #Human_Rights #Geneva #Geneva4justice #GICJ #Geneva_International_Centre_for_Justice

Earlier this year, Keith Hyams & Jessica Sutherland from the University of Warwick, consortium member of the KT4Democracy project, had written evidence published by the Human Rights (Joint Committee) of the UK Parliament. The submission highlighted the relationship between #democracy and human rights, as well as the role of AI in both fostering and undermining human rights in the UK, specifically as it relates to #equality, #privacy, and democratic #participation. 👉 Learn more about the submission here: https://lnkd.in/eM6_rvjH As demonstrated in this submission, democratic participation and associated democratic freedoms inherently promote the protection of fundamental human rights. In this piece, Professor Hyams and Dr. Sutherland also advocate for the adoption of a KT4D culture-centric approach to preserving and upholding democratic values. 🌐 Read the most recent KT4D policy brief to better understand how #culture is essential in the optimisation of knowledge technologies and democratic participation overall: https://lnkd.in/es87BSh2
