James Messerschmidt’s 1993 theory that crime serves as a resource for "doing gender" radically shifts our understanding of male criminality. It suggests that men may resort to crime to assert their masculinity in situations where traditional avenues are blocked by social or economic barriers. This concept introduces critical questions about the societal structures that foster such conditions and challenges us to reconsider rehabilitation and prevention strategies that address these deeply ingrained gender norms. How should criminal justice systems be restructured to more effectively address the societal pressures that lead to gendered criminal behaviors? What role can community programs play in reshaping these gender expectations? #Masculinities #CrimeTheory #Messerschmidt #CriminalJustice #GenderNorms #Rehabilitation #Prevention #CommunityDevelopment #SocialStructures #CriminologyResearch

👏 Last week we celebrated the #DiversityDays at Europol! 🌈 🌍 👩💻 👮♀ 👩⚖️ During these sessions we were invited to reflect on #gender equality and #sexism, #LGBTQI+ rights, #race and #ethnicity diversity and #cultural inclusivity. ⬇ Here some examples of the topics addressed: ⛓ How can #AI perpetuate wrong and hurtful #stereotypes and the implications when these tools are used by #lawenforcement authorities: AI reproduces implicit #biases of humans, even in the absence of explicit #algorithmic rules that stereotype. Human intervention is one of the solutions. However, not using factors such as #race and #skincolour for policing is another measure explained by Bas Böing. 🤝 Examples of initiatives from law enforcement to #fight #discrimination and #racism: AI profiling can exacerbate existing inequalities and deepen #mistrust between law enforcement and #minority communities. This can have serious consequences for those communities, including increased rates of policing, arrests, and incarceration. Therefore, training on these issues are essential to ensure a #fair, #efficient and #inclusive #police. 🎤 During these days remarkable voices came to participate and share their insights Ms Agnès Diallo (Executive Director of EU-Lisa), Ms Catherine De Bolle (Executive Director of Europol), Ms Michaela Moua (she/her) (Anti-Racism Coordinator at the European Commission), Ms Lut Vanderwaeren (Diversity and Inclusion Management at Federal Police Belgium), etc.

November 30, behind closed doors, the Supreme Court of Russia reviewed an administrative claim submitted by the Ministry of Justice and officially recognized the international LGBT movement as an “extremist organization”, and prohibited its activities in the country. There was an article in the medical journal The Lancet “Experts warn of health harms of Russia's anti-LGBT ruling”: https://lnkd.in/dj3frs2y This text describes the latest anti-LGBT laws that have come out in Russia and their impact on the rights and health of LGBT people. Our experts also commented on the impact of the ruling on the sexual health of LGBT people: “We know that HIV thrives when human rights are violated. But the new Russian legislation sends a direct message to the LGBT community: don’t dare speak about your rights, don’t dare speak about yourselves at all…State-induced homophobia and transphobia will force LGBT people further underground. I’m afraid this will prove itself to be an almost insurmountable barrier in the fight against the HIV epidemic among LGBT people in Russia”, Vitaly Djuma, Executive Director of the ECOM, told The Lancet. Nikolay Lunchenkov MD, MSc, LGBT Health Coordinator, added that, under the new law, providing HIV-prevention services to LGBT people would effectively be outlawed: “The organisations that were providing HIV services to key populations will be closed down very soon. The services they provide are not banned, but such organisations cannot openly say that they work with men who have sex with men and transgender people. Under the new law, it could be considered as support for extremism”.
