🇨🇭 SwissCham Asia Webinar Examines AI’s Journey, Empowerment, and Global Regulatory Challenges 👏 October 31, 2024 – In its recent webinar, “The AI Frontier: Society, Ethics, and Our Future,” SwissCham Asia, in partnership with Singularity Academy, gathered experts to dissect the multifaceted impacts of artificial intelligence on society, regulation, and sustainability. Through discussions with leading voices, the event highlighted diverse perspectives on AI’s role in shaping the future. Jachin Cheng, Product Management Director at Coupang, opened with a comprehensive narrative on AI’s development—from its early days to present-day applications and expected future breakthroughs—outlining a path forward for industries and individuals alike. Salama B., CEO of AI Career Accelerator, focused on AI’s empowerment potential, emphasising how AI can enhance daily business practices and enable professionals to make more informed decisions, bringing high-level innovation tools to individuals in practical, accessible ways. Alex de Vries-Gao, PhD researcher at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), addressed AI's environmental footprint, urging the tech industry to consider the impact of AI’s growth on sustainability and advocating for more responsible, ecologically minded development strategies. Dr. iur. Urs Lustenberger, President of SwissCham Asia, discussed regulatory perspectives, noting that AI’s current “more is better” approach contrasts with the sustainability ideal of “less is better.” He explained that AI and machine learning's rapid advancement demands thoughtful regulation that respects both innovation and environmental balance. Adding depth to the discussion, Tuck Seng Low, a Fellow at Singularity Academy, emphasized the contrasting regulatory and developmental scenarios between the Global North and South. He suggested that empowering individuals and communities from the ground up could be a more sustainable approach, as bottom-up AI empowerment might foster a balanced framework adaptable to each nation's unique context. Prof. Dr Ying Zhang, from Singularity Academy, who moderated the session, brought up the complex boundaries AI pushes and the ethical lines society may need to draw, sparking further debate among panellists on AI’s potential limitations and concerns. 🇨🇭 SwissCham Asia’s webinar provided a robust platform for exploring AI’s societal, ethical, and ecological considerations, underscoring the organization’s commitment to fostering dialogue on AI’s future and the shared responsibility of guiding its development for the global good. We're kicking off our post-summer activities at Swissnex in China with an experiment… Switzerland and China have distinct perspectives on technology’s role in society. So what happens when academics from both countries come together to discuss tech and ethics? We’re about to find out! We’ve launched a 5-day program focused on the intersection of AI, governance, ethics, and integrity in China—a global leader in applied AI. Combining open forums and closed-door workshops with site visits to AI companies, this initiative corresponds to our overarching strategy to foster deeper, more sustainable contextual knowledge and competencies in Switzerland on China, which forms the basis of any future collaboration in education, research and innovation. Our interdisciplinary Swiss participants — Patrick Tinguely, Ning Wang, Adrian Notz, Yash Raj Shrestha, Yishu Mao, Yuanjun Feng and Marie Soulière —will explore some key questions: 🔍 How are future technologies like AI being shaped, governed, and applied in China? 🔍How do Chinese tech companies apply AI technologies? 🔍 Where do Sino-Swiss approaches towards future technologies converge and where do they diverge? Where is there / Is there space for mutual learning and bilateral collaboration? 🔍 What impact will future technologies have on knowledge production in academia and research? As AI continues to influence many aspect of our lives, the decisions and frameworks we develop now will determine AI’s integrity and impact for generations to come. This programme wouldn’t be possible without the support of our great partners Leading House Asia, ETH Zurich, Frontiers, Berggruen Institute China, Fudan University, CITICPress, Pujiang Innovation Forum. 🌐 Stay tuned via our channels for updates on this exciting journey from Beijing to Shanghai: https://lnkd.in/e7NQhZv9 or follow Swissnex in China on LinkedIn.

⏰ NEW PAPER ⏰ from Kassandra Karpathakis, me, and Luciano Floridi for Digital Ethics Center (DEC), Yale University & University of Bologna In the paper we ask three questons: 1. Is the current level of investment in AI for healthcare justifiable based on AI's evidenced ability to meet healthcare system needs identified in national healthcare strategies? 2. What are the systemic barriers to justifiable return on investment? 3. How might these barriers be overcome to ensure a justifiable return and to avoid a healthcare-specific AI winter? We argue that current levels of investment appear unjustifiable as AI - both traditional and Generative - does not yet seem able to deliver on its many promises outside of the lab. However, we argue that this is not a limitation of the technology and, therefore, not a reason to reduce investment in its development. Rather, ROI for AI is currently limited by a) legacy technical infrastructure; b) insufficient social buy in; c) oversimplification of ethical considerations; and d) lack of regulatory clarity. To overcome these barriers, a number of high-level policy actions must be taken at national and international levels to: i) upgrade infrastructure to support robust information exchange; ii) demand signal from the frontline; iii) commit to value protection; iv) create a system built on meaningful accountability and auditability. ⚡ MY NEW PAPER IS PUBLISHED 🎉 I'm privileged to work with such insightful thought leaders in digital health at the Digital Ethics Center (DEC), Yale University. In our latest paper, Jessica Rose Morley, PhD, Luciano Floridi, and I ask fundamental questions based on our lived experience of trying to determine the value of implementing AI technologies in healthcare: 1. We argue that the current level of investment appears unjustifiable due to the systemic challenges we face with legacy technical infrastructure, lack of social buy-in, and insufficient regulatory clarity—not because of the technology itself. Changes must be made to create a viable health system for AI technologies to be effectively deployed. 𝗔𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆. 🔍 To our Biolevate community, As we approach the end of another transformative year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on our shared journey and reaffirm our commitment to ethical innovation in biomedical AI. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 At Biolevate, we believe that technological advancement and ethical responsibility go hand in hand. Throughout 2024, we've strived to embody our core values: 🔵 Integrity in data management 🔵 Transparency in our processes 🔵 Equity in healthcare access 🔵 Unwavering respect for privacy These principles have guided every decision we've made and every innovation we've pursued. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 This year brought its share of challenges, but they've only strengthened our resolve. We've grappled with: 📈 Ensuring truly informed patient consent 📈 Combating algorithmic bias 📈 Implementing ethical AI governance 📈 Protecting data sovereignty While the road hasn't always been smooth, we are proud of how our team has risen to meet these challenges head-on. 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🤝 As we enter 2025, the ethical landscape of biomedical AI will only grow more complex. But we are convinced that ethics isn't a constraint on innovation - it's our most powerful driver. So we pose this question to our entire community: 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱? 💬 Proven Results in 12 Months: 🚀 Drastically reduced critical regulatory timelines 🚀 Secured global partnerships across economic zones 🚀 Transformed the market access process 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 Patients can’t afford to wait, and neither can we. While others talk about the future of healthcare, we’re building it. Our mission transcends technology - it’s about bringing hope to market. This is more than innovation. This is Biolevate. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership. Here's to a new year of responsible innovation. Wishing you all a joyful holiday season and a bright start to 2025. #ResponsibleAI #EthicalInnovation #Biolevate2025
