Here we go again, headlines around Sport in schools….. but not quite getting the point. Yes PE can be massively improved, and yes providing opportunities to take part in team activities and compete has value way beyond the medals. But the core focus has to be creating the conditions within the day for children to be moving regularly, with PE and sport playing a role within that. https://lnkd.in/euSvXTsK

This is exactly what inspired me to create a developmentally appropriate scheme of work for EYFS.. sadly I often see PE teachers “scaling down” KS1 and KS2 PE units for EYFS… development happens from birth.. a bottom up approach NOT TOP DOWN! PE is SO MUCH more than Competitive Sports and invasion games, as soon as educators and professionals in the field start to realise this.. we will develop, happy active and confident movers https://lnkd.in/eB2kG7nq
Yes PE is important; and we should have plans for children to move EVERY day in schools and in the home environment. BUT.... Before we force youngsters out into competitive team sports let's just: (1) check that they can move confidently and do not have problems with (a) retained primitive reflexes (b) balance (c) bi-lateral integration of motor skills (d) postural control (e) binocular vision and visual processing. (2) have a plan to address physiological developmental delays in all children, so that the children can all develop skills fully. We also need to accept that many children do not like competitive sports, but do like playing silly fun games, or enjoy hiking and exploring, or circus skills. Let's make all our children fit to play sport and fit to learn. I have an idea….just read John Parsons comment on another thread and it triggered my mind today. Can we not do a few things better in PE such as: 1. Change the idea of school based PE from Physical Education to Physical ENJOYMENT first. Make this the direction of travel? 2. Create better social infrastructures to encourage young people to connect and play again. Apps that encourage me to meet someone else safely that enjoys playing sports/games locally without caring if we are ‘any good!’ 3. Stop pursuing performance/league/winning as a measure of Physical success??? Assess enjoyment and motivation instead? 4. After this we can talk about ‘organised sport’ Not Before. https://lnkd.in/efRthCNy

Double school sport hours, heads of five sports tell political parties… "We hope that the manifestos due to be published next week will include a commitment to put physical literacy at the heart of the school day by having a minimum of two hours of quality Sport and Physical Education mandated within the National Curriculum and every child guaranteed the opportunity to be active for an hour a day inside and outside of the school setting." The next government (frankly any government) has an opportunity to make a simple, life-changing step to improve the outcomes of millions of children - in physical and mental health and wellbeing, in education and all the positive associations that come from putting play at the heart of the development of young people. We know this at Greenhouse Sports because we live it. At Greenhouse Sports we fully endorse the call from leading sports The Football Association, England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) England Rugby, The Rugby Football League, and our great partner LTA to 'put physical literacy at the heart of the school day.' We are a living example of how this delivers success. Our coach-mentors provide expert sports coaching and personal development sessions for hours beyond PE each day, week and year for more than 9000 children a year, specifically from the most disadvantaged backgrounds - all for free - and the outcomes are much higher school attendance and higher performance in education. More so, they are healthier and happier and, supported by our coach-mentors, build the resilience and the confidence to meet the clear and present challenges of growing up today. If this is not in any manifesto this week, our young people will want answers from those who want our votes. We will challenge them with an invitation - come to our schools, meet our coaches and the next generation at play and see how it works - they will show you where you are going missing. #TeamforLife https://lnkd.in/eHUMRHSB

Every child is born with a flair for one or more sports. . I remember when I was much younger, I usually love to run, and later in my junior class(JSS 2), I started representing my school, which was all girls' school in running. . I left the school to another after my Junior QAEC, and I discovered I picked interest in basketball. . I would play with my brothers at home since we had a court, but I never thought of the need to represent my school. . I was focused on studying, but I never missed watching other students play and I truly wished I kept on with a particular sports because seeing others win medals, bring home championship cups and trophies, and still saw how well they did in their academics, some where top of their classes, made more sense to me. . Sports stimulate the child's brain in ways you may not have imagined. . Sports is education disguised as play. . Parents should understand that allowing your child to get involved in sports brings a balance between play and academics. . Some children may become professionals in sports, not in academics. . It starts now!! -------- As we celebrate "International Day of Sport for Development and Peace," today, April 6, be reminded to engage your child in more than one sport so you can discover the particular one they love and are better in. #childatheartconsultbygifty #childcare #education #consulting

I am passionate about public education... Digest this alarming fact about funding.... The SMH reports about the inequities between non-Government (private) and Government school resources/assets available for schools to use as part of their school sporting programs. One of the points mentioned was around the number of basketball courts shared between 4 private schools (have a guess, answer at the bottom) along the Pacific Highway in Sydney compared to some inner-west Sydney schools who are cancelling sport due to increasing expenses. These expenses relate to the transportation costs of students to council run, public courts (among some of the issues). Funding... Here are some freely available figures: Figure #1: There are approximately 460,000 students in the NSW non-Government system. Figure #2: There are approximately 2,200 NSW Government schools. Figure #3: Roughly, depending on a number of socio-economic statistics, the Federal Government allocates $10,000 per student to non-Government schools. IF, Federal funding was removed from the private sector and moved into the public system and shared EQUALLY among the roughly 2,200 schools, each school would have an extra, approximately, $2,000,000. That's a basketball court in every public school in the state. Arguments around the cost saved by funding private schools will always exist... but the reality is, there is a huge inequity between the systems. The answer to how many basketball courts between the 4 private schools? 17. https://lnkd.in/gXnEGdf7

Let’s talk PE & Sports Premium Funding 💰 As we enter the final term of the academic year, we know teachers across the country will be looking into and trying to finalise their budgets for the upcoming academic year, not least that budget allocated for PE & Sports Premium. This initiative introduced in 2013 has been a huge success and allowed children throughout the UK to access a whole range of sporting activities! The DfE has identified 5 key priorities for the funding to be spent on: 1️⃣ To increase staff confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport 2️⃣ To increase the engagement of all pupils in physical activity 3️⃣ To raise the profile of PE and sport across the school 4️⃣ To broaden the range of sports and physical activities, pupils receive 5️⃣ To increase competitive sport participation However, many PE Coordinators fall into the trap of heavily allocating the majority of these funds towards re-stocking or upgrading sports equipment. Whilst on face value this may seem beneficial, throughout the course of an academic year this is not always the most sustainable way and can prove more costly in the long run. Working closely with an external sports provider like ourselves at Sprint Active Education can be a more cost effective use of Sports Premium funding, as schools not only have access to qualified coaches but their high standard sports equipment and resources 🏸 If you’d be interested to discuss how best to allocate your sports premium funding, then please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Account Manager Lewis Haldane - 07480-803 389 ☎ lewis@sprintactive.co.uk 📧 #sportspremium #schoolfunding #PEfunding
