This was an interesting time to speak to Simon as Smithson’s high-quality portfolio now trades on a notably more attractive valuation level both in absolute terms, given the derating of higher growth, small and mid-sized companies seen over the last two years, and in relative terms, following the unusually prolonged period of underperformance of small/mid caps when compared to large caps. The episode also discusses the impact of share buybacks, using Smithson as an example of how value accretive the process can be and why, in our view, buybacks should form a part of prudent capital allocation for many UK-listed investment companies given the current prevalence of wide share price discounts within the listed fund sector.
