It serves as a reminder that cultural change within law enforcement will not be simple. Politics, people, and your own fears and insecurities will sometimes be your biggest enemies as a transformative leader. How do you conquer these challenges to steer your organization? You already understand that the past hasn't worked and the current situation isn't working, but the change you envision is still so far off and significant that it has shaken your core value of being comfortable. Collin Powell stated, "None of us can change our yesterdays, but all of us can change our tomorrows." Your organization tomorrow is dependent on your willingness to push for change! Push yourself out of comfortability, push your subordinates, and push your organization to excellence. Don't settle for anything that is not characteristic of a well-developed organization. In the fight for reform, I leave these additional thought and/or question for my brothers and sisters: juvenile justice advocates, adult jails and corrections, and public safety. How does your vision propel the organization you lead to excellence? https://lnkd.in/gSSx7TnP

Founder - Unlocking Justice | Former Prison Group Director - London Prisons | Complex Leadership Specialist | Procedural Justice Expert | Executive Coach | Passionate about Prison Reform and System Change
It’s been a busy couple of weeks since launching Unlocking Justice – both affirming and validating for me as lots of people have reached out to wish me luck, it's been really appreciated and sometimes quite humbling. I’ve had some interesting enquiries and lots of opening conversations with people and organisations about how I can help them. The breadth of help needed in this sector has been eye opening for me to be honest. I have realised, now being “outside” the system, just how much of a need there is to get the great service provision (that you are probably already running and delivering) into prisons and working effectively. One of my potential clients has asked how they can grow their service in prisons and widen participation – something I can help with; another has asked how they can break through the barriers of entry into prisons and implement their products and services within the system effectively – again my network of contacts and experience in how to work in complex settings can help them too. A third has asked me to help upskill their staff as they expand and recruit new starters into their organisation. We all know how important effective communication, training and ongoing development is in this space, and I am hoping to speed up their induction journey to be effective in role and drive the desired outcomes for those in prison that they will work with. I have also secured my first two Executive Coaching clients which I am delighted about, and I am hoping that others will follow. As we all know personal growth and developing strategies for effective delivery and leadership is a key foundation. Some exciting news to follow too as I have been having some great conversations with overseas clients…watch this space. If you think you or your organisation could benefit from my help, please reach out. Feel free to reshare with your network so others can see how my work is looking to have a positive impact in the sector and those working within it. You can see my website at www.unlockingjustice.co.uk or email me at ian@unlockingjustice.co.uk or message me directly here. #prisonconsultancy #systemnavigation #complexenvironments #executivecoaching #strategyandbusinessdevelopment #proceduraljustice

PASS JURY OF OUR PEERS AND END THE LIFETIME BAN ON JURY SERVICE FOR FOLKS WITH A CRIMINAL CONVICTION! Serving on a jury is a cornerstone of our democracy - but New York, in one of the most regressive policies in the country, has a lifetime ban for people with a felony conviction. The Jury of Our Peers Act, sponsored by NYS Senator Cleare and Assemblymember Aubry, would eliminate the lifetime ban and automatically restore the right to serve on a jury when someone completes a term of imprisonment. Jury of Our Peers is good for broader society too - restoring someone's civic rights is proven to reduce recidivism and more racially diverse juries are shown to deliberate longer and consider a wider variety of information. The current lifetime ban in NY has a major impact on the diversity of juries - and not just in Manhattan, which has the highest disparity in felony convictions based on race. Black people are convicted of felonies and misdemeanors at a rate 21x greater than white people in Manhattan - Warren County New York comes in at a close second, at 19x greater. Jury of Our Peers will have far-reaching impacts across the state, not just in NYC. (https://lnkd.in/eByzJ-DB) https://lnkd.in/ey4nmFPd
Commentary: End the lifetime ban on jury service for people with felony convictions

Equity Driven Leader of the People | Educational Consultant | CEO and Founder of LeAja Consulting, LLC. | Executive Director and Founder of JAX Aspire Foundation | Educational Blogger | Racial Justice Healing Advocate
No one should ever be proud that the youth continue to suffer at the hands of this corrupt society. The School to Prison Pipeline disproportionately impacts black students and no one seems to care about proactive strategies to address this. We continue to allow the reactionary police to intervene ballooning the local school to prison pipeline. Rid of poor leadership. Hold leaders accountable. Maybe if the sbcsc would address the stipulations in the consent decree we wouldn’t continue to see the disparities that exist and a toxic school system that persists. Fire Todd! SBCSC https://chng.it/YgVSvTB4BS Email alyson.schwartz@usdoj.gov to express how sbcsc enables a toxic culture by not addressing the federal mandates in the consent decree. Many thanks to Nixon Peabody LLP for organizing an important firmwide discussion today on Jewish Identity and Antisemitism in the 21st Century. The program, presented by the American Jewish Committee (AJC), was thought-provoking and informative. I was pleased to have participated from our Los Angeles Office, where AJC’s Richard Hirschhaut and Francine Lis joined us. It’s unfortunate that we need to continue these conversations — but we do. I appreciate our firm leaders stepping up to tackle this crucial issue. #fightinghate #standuptojewishhate #lawfirmleadership #lawfirm
