Two Irish-led firms included in list of ‘most exciting European #fintechs’ Business Insider’s ranking - compiled by venture capitalists - features 32 firms in total. Among the companies included is Kota, the employee benefits company formerly known as Yonder. Founded in Dublin in 2022 by chief executive Luke Mackey, chief technology officer Patrick O'Boyle and director of engineering Deepak Baliga, Kota is focused on simplifying health and pension benefits businesses and their employees. The company raised €5 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round late last year led by EQT Ventures, a Swedish venture capital firm. Other backers include Northzone and Frontline Ventures. Atoa, a London-based start-up co-founded by Irishman Cian O'Dowd, also makes the fintech list. The company is focused on helping retailers cut down on card processing fees with an alternative that allows consumers to pay in-store using an instant bank transfer. It claims that by allowing consumers and businesses to bypass what it calls “obsolete payment stacks” through open banking and account-to-account payments, saves merchants up to 70 per cent on transactions. Atoa last year raised $6.5 million (€6 million) in a seed round led by Valar Ventures LLC, a US fund backed by tech billionaire Peter Thiel. ⚡️ Who’d have thought?  #Tuesday_alert: FinTech M&A activities challenge the notion of a slow year. Contrary to expectations, TechCrunch spotted not one but three big deals making waves in the FinTech market in the last weeks. 1. Webull Financial's Mexican venture Webull started the acquisition spree by acquiring Flink México, a Mexican wealthtech. Flink's unique offerings, like access to the U.S. stock market and fractional shares for Mexican investors, caught Webull's attention. This move marks Webull's strategic expansion into the Latin American market, with plans to use Mexico as a "springboard" for further growth in the region. 2. Yieldstreet's ambitious move Yieldstreet revealed plans to acquire Cadre, an online marketplace connecting accredited real estate investors with operators. While the deal wasn't a surprise, it's fascinating how FinTech companies like Cadre leverage market conditions to strategically expand without reinventing the wheel. 3. NomuPay's European expansion Dublin-based NomuPay, born out of the remnants of Wirecard, made a strategic move by acquiring Total Processing, a Manchester startup specializing in payment processing solutions. This $35 million deal adds significant value, pushing NomuPay's total valuation to $135 million.
