In a recent discussion about El Abd Foods' remarkable 50-year evolution, I was struck by the parallels between their story and Hubert Joly's transformative work at Best Buy, a story he shared with us at the Strategic Innovation+ event. Both narratives underscore a crucial lesson: innovation isn't confined to technology—it's equally powerful in operations and corporate culture. El Abd Foods, a pillar of Egypt's confectionery industry, has demonstrated this principle time and again. During the Egyptian revolution, they faced a critical challenge with inventory worth 10 million EGP (now valued at 100 million EGP) at risk in their Tahrir Square branches. Their innovative solution? A strategic pivot to hypermarket distribution, successfully salvaging 80% of the at-risk stock. This adaptive strategy echoes Joly's approach at Best Buy, where operational innovation was key to the company's turnaround. Just as Joly reimagined retail operations to compete in the digital age, El Abd Foods reinvented their distribution model to overcome a national crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic presented another opportunity for El Abd Foods to showcase their operational prowess. By transitioning to 24/7 factory operations, they effectively mitigated the impact of curfew restrictions. This agility in crisis mirrors Best Buy's swift adaptation to online and curbside pickup models during the same period. Haytham El Abd the company's Chief Operating Officer, shared these insights, highlighting the company's commitment to operational excellence. This commitment extends to their approach to expansion. When considering export opportunities, MD Mostafa El Abd emphasized the importance of perfecting local operations first—a strategy reminiscent of Joly's focus on strengthening core operations before pursuing new ventures.
