Because the future of construction isn't just in our blueprints—it's in our classrooms. #ConstructionWithPurpose #SocialValue #BuildingFutures

"One significant challenge is the general lack of understanding of what social value is. There is a perception that it only involves cash donations to support community initiatives but, while there may be some scope for businesses to donate to or sponsor community activities, the focus should really be on helping people to develop new skills to enable them to improve their lives." "Corporate social responsibility has been a term used by socially aware companies for years, but real, tangible activity and quantifying success is encompassed by social value. This covers several areas including volunteering, sponsorship, donations in kind, and skills and employment." #construction Today in Building Magazine, Kelly Sowden MCIPR examines the route to progress within a construction business context and all things social value. https://lnkd.in/ejDReEvn

We at CWA and CES have expressed and shared many examples of how important the current affordable housing situation is within the United States and here in Michigan. In order to continue this important conversation, we'd like to share details surrounding the Michigan Association of Planning-associated series of events, the "Rural Real Estate Development Boot Camp." This important series is a "a multi-part training program designed to give you the tools needed to develop affordable housing in your community." Organized by the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), the series target audiences are "Community members who are interested in revitalizing their community through small- to medium-scale development projects" and "Nonprofit housing development staff who may be seeking to actualize a range of housing and community development projects utilizing LIHTC or other sources." At Jerram Falkus Construction Limited we are passionate about being good neighbours and this is something we strive to improve upon as each project progresses. Last month, we were delighted when our Roxwell Road project fantastic score with the Considerate Constructors Scheme – an improvement upon what were already exemplary records. The project is being led by Project Leader Peter Gaffey and Project Manager Mark Conway. We register each and every site with the scheme and Roxwell Road is described as an example of good practice across all aspects of the scheme. We have thoroughly engaged with the local community, supporting charities, local education facilities and businesses. Communication has remained a top priority with all stakeholders, with all media channels being used to ensure the public informed about the works and ongoing updates will continue. We consider each aspect of the works with regard to disruption and this can be mitigated as much as possible. We continue to engage positively with the community and have provided regular updates to our stakeholders. Much work has been undertaken with local groups and charities with further works planned by Social Value Manager, Alison Cormack. There is a positive approach to sustainability with company and site KPIs to reduce waste with a carbon neutral commitment plan in place. The workforce is supported with policies in place to promote both physical and mental wellbeing. Good welfare facilities are being provided with consideration for a work/life balance. Under our carbon reduction and net zero commitments waste has been carefully monitored and the use of materials is well controlled across the project. We will be planting many new trees and supporting biodiversity once the project nears completion. Well done team and lets keep going! #Construction #ConsiderateConstructors #CommunityEngagement #SustainableBuilding #ConstructionLife #GoodPractice #BuildingBetter

When many of us think of Community Land Trusts we think about affordable houses. We don't always think about the assets that are in community ownership providing the utilities that these homes need to be places where people, families and communities can live and thrive. In fact, over 100 CLTs already own and steward water assets, mostly on a small scale - and there are real social, economic and environmental benefits to this community stewardship. We've partnered with Arup, United Utilities and CLES - Centre for Local Economic Strategies on the Enabling Water Smart Communities programme to explore the role that community stewardship of assets can play in a world where water scarcity, flood risk and housing growth are increasingly causing concern. https://lnkd.in/eKpTY9rH Read our article for more information, including a case study from KENNETT COMMUNITY LAND TRUST LIMITED, who will steward 60 affordable homes, as well as all of the open space, commercial assets and public amenities in the 500 home Kennett Garden Village development
One of the key areas of focus of the Enabling Water Smart Communities programme is stewardship. Working with key partners including United Utilities, Community Land Trust Network (CLTN), Arup and the CLES - Centre for Local Economic Strategies, we're developing approaches for community-based stewardship of water assets such as sustainable drainage systems. One of those partners, The Community Land Trust Network, a national charity and membership body for Community Land Trusts (CLTs) in England and Wales, has recently produced a fascinating article for EWSC, as a contribution to the ongoing development of thinking around community-led stewardship of water assets. Key takeaways include: 👉 How CLTs are already a well established model for the development and stewardship of land and assets. 👉 Exploring how CLTs can emphasise greater levels of democracy and community participation. 👉 The importance of community-led stewardship in deepening public engagement in water issues. Read the full article here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eKpTY9rH and let us know your thoughts in the comments! #enablingwatersmartcommunities #EWSC #CLTs #Community

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor: 2024 reinforced what 27 years in civil engineering has taught me: sustainable placemaking isn't just about infrastructure—it's about creating spaces where communities thrive. Leading transformative projects across Manchester while participating in initiatives from LandAid SleepOut to charity music nights showed how technical excellence and social responsibility go hand in hand. Key developments that shaped our impact: • Advanced major sustainable urban regeneration projects including Salford Rise • Led community engagement through industry events including UKREiiF and Education Estates • Strengthened Manchester's professional community through both technical excellence and social impact • Expanded our influence on sustainable infrastructure solutions Three posts that captured our journey: "Rethinking Regeneration" - On why meaningful community consultation matters: "Communities don't understand or trust planning around regeneration - only 2% of people trust developers and 48% have never heard about a planning consultation" "Overbury FIT Out Charity Music Night" - Breaking boundaries for good causes: "An amazing event supporting Mustard Tree and the amazing work they do to combat poverty and homelessness in the community" https://lnkd.in/ejXuwqtY "LandAid SleepOut Manchester" - Taking direct action on homelessness: "Very proud to get such a big team committed to raising funds and awareness for this brilliant charity" https://lnkd.in/e7-PFGn7 Looking ahead: 2025 will see us expanding our impact on Manchester's communities through innovative infrastructure solutions and strengthened industry partnerships. The focus remains on delivering sustainable urban regeneration while ensuring our work creates meaningful social value. To our partners across Manchester's construction and development community, particularly those working to make our urban spaces more sustainable and inclusive - thank you for another year of meaningful collaboration. The science of civil engineering may be in the structures we build, but the art is in how they serve the people who use them. #sustainableplacemaking hashtag #infrastructure -- Get your 2024 LinkedIn Rewind!
