Useful independent summary of the #SIDS4 conference by the International Institute for Sustainable Development Earth Negotiations Bulletin. I haven't yet processed all of my thoughts after a hectic week, and months of work by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) leading up to this, but certainly the real work lies ahead for the Caribbean and other SIDS to lead our own development. But the challenge is too big for governments alone. SIDS civil society must be recognised and supported as key partners in a whole of society approach to delivering sustainable development - by SIDS, with SIDS, for SIDS!

#incentivesmatter and thinking about the role of govt, as both an allocator of resources from tax dollars and as an agent of change via policy, hence #transitionrisk, do governments have the power “alone”? In some sense, depends on the effectiveness of government in enforcing its own policies (thinking here of the Jamaican government’s inability to get traffic compliance), but I don’t think we are even at that stage. What’s the proportion of GHGs that can be shifted by govt policy and where are we now even in terms of laws that could potentially induce these shifts? Peter E.T. Edwards, PhD. Really interestingly, seems like there are actions regarding the sea that could buy time if I’m understanding (??) and we aren’t taking those relatively low cost actions. Not clear why. Lack of global coordination? Would love to know your views!!

"If we fail on water, we will fail on all of the SDGs..." So what do we need to ensure a sustainable future of water for all? Public-private partnerships could help catalyze a variety of conservation and water supply efforts, especially in water-scarce regions. The most widely agreed upon concept of sustainable development is the Brundtland Statement. In 1983 the United Nations set up an independent body, the World Commission on Environment and Development, headed by Gro Harlem Brundtland, the former prime minister of Norway. The commission was asked to examine the critical environmental and developmental problems facing our planet and to formulate realistic proposals to solve them. The proposed solution was to make sure that human progress can be sustained, but without bankrupting the resources of future generations. 🎉 The 8th meeting of the Task Force on the #Water, #Food, #Energy, #Ecosystems #Nexus marks a decade of dedicated work on cross-sectoral cooperation under the Water Convention. Today, the Task Force's mission is as relevant as ever: to catalyse much-needed action across water, food, energy, and ecosystems through transboundary cooperation. 🌍 Over 200 participants, both in person and virtual, are joining us to commemorate this significant occasion! 🙌 This diverse group includes policy makers and experts from 77 countries, representing 46 UN member states, and 50+ international organizations, basin organizations, and NGOs focused on sustainability, water, energy, and environmental issues. 💡 Today and tomorrow, participants will take stock of the work done so far and discuss the future activities of the Nexus Task Force. 💧 In the face of the global water crisis, public-private partnerships (PPPs) have a crucial role to play. From Singapore’s successful case with its Public Utility Board to CDG Capital’s investment in a large desalination plant in Morocco, PPPs have shown their potential to drive mission-oriented innovation for commercial benefit and maximize public benefits. As we approach the 2030 deadline for the SDGs, it’s time to put water at the center of our discussions and policymaking. 🎉 The third independent evaluation of the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), conducted by Baastel, is fresh out of the oven!   Launched in 2008, the FCPF is the world’s largest multilateral REDD+ financing mechanism, providing readiness support and result-based payments. 🌍💰 REDD+ stands for “Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries”. The + stands for additional forest-related activities that protect the climate, namely sustainable management of forests and the conservation and enhancement of forest carbon stocks.   Key lessons from our evaluation:   ⚖️ Balance demands for high-integrity emission reduction credits with the complexity of Measuring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and carbon accounting  ⏳ Capacity development takes time for full internalization within government agencies  📈 Readiness support builds a solid base to leverage additional financing  💵 Maintain financial support as countries transition to results-based payments  🌱 Non-carbon benefits are critical for effective and sustainable emission reduction programs. Clear guidance is needed for their identification and monitoring.  🌐 Broad-based participation in global governance structures ensures transparency and effective representation.  🤝 Aligning private sector interests with REDD+ program objectives offers significant collaboration opportunities.   Baastel is proud to have conducted this global evaluation, highlighting the successes and challenges of the FCPF.
