To most companies, Mission Statement, Vision Statement, and Core Values are just buzzwords. At my company, we won't hire any applicant unless they embody our 5 Core Values. Our Core Values are a little different than the norm: 1. Reliable Consistently delivering on our promises and being a dependable partner to our clients and partners. 2. Accountable We take responsibility for our actions and work to continuously improve and learn from any mistakes. 3. Communicative We value open and honest communication with all stakeholders and believe that transparency is crucial to building strong relationships. 4. Gritty When faced with challenges, we never give up and are willing to put in the extra effort to succeed. 5. Results-Driven We are always striving for excellence and work hard to achieve the best possible results in everything we do. We require all applicants to explain how they embody our Core Values during the interview process. This is a major part of our recruiting.

Should company values be maintained during the hiring process? The obvious answer is a resounding YES, however, that is not representative of what is going on in today's hiring atmosphere. Time and time again, I hear horror stories from my clients about the hiring process and how they have been treated by different companies. I am shocked to hear the names of some of these companies and their misdeeds during the recruiting process. The issue is that there is a clear disconnect between the values they uphold and how they represent themselves during the hiring process. -> Poor or inexistent communication -> No transparency -> Hiring managers not being professional (showing up to interviews late, not being prepared, not dressing professionally, etc.) -> Etc - the list goes on! The point here is that your recruiting process should uphold your brand, your company values, and your reputation. Why, in 2024, we are letting this process go completely crap is beyond me! Candidates deserve better! Let's all try to do better....much better!

Most organizations are adept in describing job functions and gauging an individual’s ability to complete desired tasks, but how do we examine a current or potential employee’s “fit” through the lens of character? 1. Clearly define values – If we have not defined our values as an organization, we cannot hope to predict whether an employee’s values and character will align with our own. 2. Observe more broadly – A typical interview is performative in nature. A potential employee tries to anticipate an employer’s questions and prepare compelling answers. But the goal of an interview shouldn’t be to see who performs best in this staged environment but to truly get to know a candidate. 3. Set expectations Ever get frustrated by managers who “save up” mistakes or concerns for an annual review and end up expressing displeasure with something that happened nine months ago? To gain insights into the company's culture, consider these steps: - Explore the company online, including the 'About Us' section and social media posts. - Check online reviews, such as those on Glassdoor. - Consult your professional network for any insights about the company. - Ask questions about company culture during the interview. It's your right to gather all necessary information before making a decision!
