I remember an emergency Sunday night executive team meeting in early April 2020, where our CEO announced the idea. I was leading sales then, and I asked, “What would you like to come from this initiative?” I thought that our founders would want some business development benefit. Also, as the head of the go-to-market function, this line of question was in my nature. When Alexi Robichaux proclaimed that the number one metric was ‘people under care,’ you could feel the gravity of the situation. We had a mission bigger than growing a start-up. We were here to help. That week in NYC, there were images of makeshift trucks serving as morgues in the streets, emergency tents in the parks, everything was shut down, the death toll was on the rise, and at 7PM every night, we cheered for front line workers out our windows. I read a comment today that we need to start changing our mindset to think of our profession as “pre-hospital care” and less that it’s just “emergency care”. I could not agree more. This mindset change is so important and overdue. Once we start recognizing that our profession goes well beyond an emergency call we can start to break down our own jaded opinions about “non-emergency” assignments and how they aren’t worthy of our time. We need to start acting like the pre-hospital clinicians that we are and take the time to assess, educate when necessary, and know that everyone is worthy of our care even if it doesn’t include fancy push-dose pressors and intubations.
