A sociological gaze at activism in sport, interesting to understand how the voice of athletes is at the heart of political struggles on doping issues. Many thanks to my colleagues for this great collaboration. To summarize: Advocacy has pushed influential sport organisations to change the sports culture, in particular in the fight against doping and on issues of integrity in sport. However, beneath advocacy for ‘noble causes’ lie struggles for meaning and power. Some advocates committed to protecting athletes’ rights are also appropriating “their voice” and using their symbolic capital, albeit without their consent, in power games against the Olympic Committee or the World Anti-Doping Agency. https://buff.ly/48vb9QC

So why do clubs respond by cutting their womens set up? In the mens game, there is an ambition, patience and desire to invest. Clubs must move with the times and mindset shift around womens football. We are an investable entity! Get on the train or get left behind.

The Government is now ‘dancing on the head of a pin’ in backtracking an important policy, and trying to “ensure both fairness and inclusivity” in community sport. Previously the NZ First-led coalition agreement made it a policy to potentially withhold public funding from New Zealand sports bodies if they do not comply with a requirement to separate transgender athletes from grassroots competitions (I.e. preventing biological men from competing against girls and women in grassroots sports). We think the government is ignoring the safety and fairness required in sports especially for women, but also strong public opinion, by turning a blind eye to biological males playing in female sports against girls and women. #womenssports #whatisawoman #familyfirst #familyfirstnz https://lnkd.in/gDksmEnz

Sports, the pinnacle of human prowess and endurance, has historically shaped societies, becoming an integral part of our lives. It serves as a healthy pastime, a source of patriotic pride, a peaceful diplomatic avenue, and a captivating form of entertainment. Yet, labeling today's sports fans in one word proves challenging. If "dedicated" comes to mind, you're among the few who recognize their commitment. However, gender influences how this dedication is perceived. Sadly, descriptions of female fans often bear the stains of misogyny. Women have long embraced sports, sharing the excitement of stadiums or watching from home, but media, fans, and even sports management don't always accord them the same respect as men.
