One of the best things about being at Tinmouse is knowing that I work for a company that not only cares about the planet, but actively tries to make it a better place 🌍 We're a member of the 1% for the Planet club, and that means we donate 1% of our annual profits to charities and causes that mitigate our carbon footprint. 5th June 2024 marks Environmental Day, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness and promoting action towards environmental conservation. Plastic fishing is a unique approach to tackling the issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. It involves individuals or groups going out on boats equipped with special nets to collect plastic waste from the water. The collected plastic is then sorted and properly disposed of or recycled. This activity serves multiple purposes. First and foremost, it helps remove harmful plastic waste from aquatic ecosystems, preventing it from harming marine life and polluting our waters. By engaging in plastic fishing, individuals actively contribute to the preservation of our environment. Moreover, plastic fishing also serves as an educational tool, raising awareness about the severity of plastic pollution and its impact on the planet. Where do your items go? Items gathered through our collection process undergo meticulous sorting and processing by our recycling partners, Loftex Home - USA and Renewcell. Within this comprehensive system, a significant portion of clothing is either designated for reuse through donation or sale. These items find a second life, benefiting others or contributing to charitable causes. The recyclable items, on the other hand, are reintegrated into the production cycle as textiles for crafting new clothing. This sustainable approach minimizes waste and promotes a circular economy, where materials are repurposed to extend their lifespan. Even the smaller fraction of donations that may not be suitable for recycling don’t go to waste. Instead, these items are repurposed as stuffing or insulation, ensuring they serve a practical purpose rather than contributing to environmental harm. In our commitment to sustainability, we take pride in the fact that none of the clothing collected ends up in a landfill. By implementing these eco-friendly practices, we strive to make a positive impact on both the environment and communities in need.

New Welsh recycling laws coming into force this week - what you need to know 🔎 Starting April 6th, Welsh businesses, charities, and public sector organisations must separate their waste for recycling. This new system mirrors household recycling in Wales and aims to improve commercial recycling rates. Here's what you need to know: - Separate collection will be required for specific materials like paper, plastic, food (for some businesses), and more. - The changes apply to all workplaces, including hospitality, retail, and agriculture. (Hospitals have a two-year grace period.) - Non-compliance could result in fines or court action. Earth Day 2024 sees the theme of planet vs plastics, drawing our focus to the critical issue of plastic pollution on nature, our planet and communities around the world. Plastic pollution has reached a point where its ubiquity is impossible to ignore. It has infiltrated our beaches and cities and the most isolated corners of our planet, entering the food chain and the human body. Additionally, almost all plastics are created from oil, gas and coal, exacerbating a reliance on fossil fuels. Plastic waste is mostly exported from the Global North to countries in the Global South that are ill-equipped to handle the waste; a form of waste colonialism. This exploitation of lower-income nations creates burdening issues that affect pollution, human health, ecosystems and local economies, perpetuating environmental injustice and exploitation. This week, we're raising money that will provide global communities with essential climate education to tackle climate change wherever they are. 5 days, 5 photos of the waste going on all around all of us every… single… day…   This is the last in our week-long photo series of truckloads of unnecessary waste-to-landfill, shared with me by Julian Zambrano Vesga, who received the photos from the demoralised truckie hired to transport these loads to the tip. This fitout waste is an everyday occurrence across Australia. Do the sums - that’s an awful lot of value down the drain and a sickening amount of destruction.   It's what happens when organisations don’t use our free, online FTD Circular Supplier Directory to find the organisations (and charities) who will re-use, repair, sell, donate and recycle these materials. It’s what happens when people don’t reach out to us and don’t invest in circularity support. It’s what happens when no one sees what the truckie sees because it’s all another department’s responsibility, it has all been outsourced to contractors, it’s all been written off or ‘offset’ and it’s all happening out in the back lane.   It's your (and our) economic value. It’s your (and our) land, water and air. It’s your (and our) problem.
