May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we in the Gore Giovale Center for Innovative Leadership want to acknowledge that mental health matters. You are not alone. Here are a few things we can do to work on ending mental health stigma in our world (from the Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services): 1. Talk openly about mental health 2. Educate yourself and others 3. Be conscious of the language that you use 4. Encourage equality between mental & physical health 5. Be honest about treatment & prompt others to seek help 6. Show compassion to anyone struggling with mental health issues 7. Choose empowerment over shame 8. Get mental health information from credible sources And remember, Westminster University has free mental health resources for students. Check out the link in our bio for more information. #westminsterslc

July is #BIPOCMentalHealth Awareness Month, a time to highlight the unique mental health challenges of historically disenfranchised and oppressed racial and ethnic groups in the U.S. Communities of color not only experience disproportionate rates of mental health issues resulting from stressors like racism, oppression, and generational trauma, they also experience more barriers to mental health care, such as stigma and lack of access to mental health resources. This month, we encourage everyone to take steps toward improving mental health in BIPOC communities. Mental Health America has free resources to help you better understand the unique issues facing people of color and to properly support their mental health needs. Their BIPOC Mental Health Toolkit includes a variety of material to help combat stigma, dismantle myths, and encourage conversations about mental health: https://bit.ly/3xLBQTU #PeerSupport #MentalHealth

May is Mental Health Awareness Month This national observance was started in 1949 by Mental Health America to bring attention to the importance of mental well-being. This is a time to promote awareness, offer education and resources, and advocate for change. While society is getting more comfortable discussing mental health, stigma still exists. 💡Many Americans do not have access to high-quality, evidence-based treatment and care when they need it. 💡 Less than ½ of adults in the United States with mental illness received treatment in 2021. 💡1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. 💡1 in 6 youth in the United Stated have a mental health condition but only half receive treatment. Please take the time to talk about mental health and to create communities that value and support mental well-being. #MHAM2024 #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealth #mentalhealthmatters #selfcare #mindset #wellness #mentalwellbeing #stopthestigma

Mental health stigma + a lack of human connections = isolated people. Approaching someone about their mental health does not have to be complicated – but we definitely get in our heads about it! A difference can be made to someone’s day by simply having a conversation with them, but even this can feel fraught with perils when you’re afraid to say something wrong. This is where Mental Health First Aiders come in. Within their role, a Mental Health First Aider can bridge the mental health gap by: 👉 Providing early intervention for individuals experiencing mental ill health 👉 Targeting mental health stigma 👉 Signposting to further support Not sure how to start a conversation? “Evidence suggests that people from Black Asian and Minority Ethnic communities are at higher risk of developing a mental health problem in adulthood. But they’re less likely to receive support for their mental health.” Do you see the support gap? The lack of inclusion and understanding surrounding the impact of racism on mental health means our communities are losing out. Our Healthy Minds programme is designed to provide resources specifically on racism and its impact on mental health. We want this to be a platform where voices are heard and perspectives seen. Especially of those directly impacted as their lived experiences hold the key to fostering a more inclusive and informed understanding of mental health challenges. 🫶🏾 #babayangufoundation #communutyproject #empoweringcommunities #breakingmentalbarriers

One out of every five adults in the U.S. experiences some type of mental health issue every year. However, for some, seeking mental health support can be challenging. July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This observance raises awareness of the challenges that affect the mental health of racial and ethnic minority groups. People from a variety of backgrounds often face stressors that are specific to their experiences and may mistrust doctors or have less access to mental health and substance use treatment services. They may also view mental illness as a weakness they need to hide or feel uncomfortable with a doctor who doesn’t speak their native language or understand their cultural experiences. GuideWell and Florida Blue are committed to addressing these challenges so everyone can have the opportunity to achieve optimal mental well-being.
