Industrial Sociologist working in Higher Education| Master's Student I Emerging Researcher| Consultant| YALI RLC-SA Alumni

This morning, I unexpectedly crossed paths with Minister Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy. Our chance encounter at Mike's Heritage House led to a valuable dialogue where I shared insights from my Master's research on the working conditions of women in South Africa's platinum mines. Minister Mantashe's vast experience and knowledge on the mining industry, coupled with discussions on the 2018 Mining Charter and its upcoming review in 2024, highlighted the vital connection between academic research and policymaking. Our exchange emphasized the significance of understanding the challenges faced by female miners and the mining sector as a whole. Our interaction showcased the symbiotic relationship between scholarly investigations and government actions, reinforcing the collaborative efforts needed to address the complexities within the mining industry. Integrating academic research with policy discussions is crucial for driving positive change and enhancing the well-being of those working in the sector. This encounter exemplified how academic endeavors can influence and be influenced by governmental policies, illustrating the transformative power of combining research insights with real-world perspectives. His parting words: "ensure that you read my Masters research report, I did it with Wits you know? There are issues mentioned there which still persists today and can be further researched." #WomenInMiningResearch #WomenInMining #WIM #MineralResources #WorkingConditions #MaleDominatedSpaces #GenderEquality #SDG5 #MastersResearch #Postgraduate

Gosiame Noge I look forward to reading you’re paper. I work for Rand Mutual Assurance, as a company that provides compensation for injuries that occur on duty in the mining and metals industries, your research will provide valuable insights into the working conditions of the workers we insure.

This!!! And there is a dearth of academic research and data on how women experience the world of work especially in mining. I'm looking forward to your paper to gain further insights on how we can create data-driven sustainable impact to change the landscape for women in this key sector of the economy.
