Mining 2030 aims to challenge, review and change how investors understand, interact and value the mining industry.   Chronos Sustainability is proud to lead the secretariat for the Global Investor Commission on Mining 2030, a collaborative investor-led initiative, with a mission to develop a vision for a socially and environmentally responsible mining sector by 2030.  Today, the Commission has announced that 82 investors with over $11 trillion in assets under management and advice have pledged their support.   To coincide with this announcement, we have put out our first call for evidence, to understand future supply and demand and key challenges that could prevent demand from being met. Hot off the press! Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) just launched GRI 14: Mining Sector 2024, a common standard for the mining industry (see link below). This is will provide a universal set of standards specifically for mining companies, which includes disclosures on Closure and Rehabilitation, Artisanal and Small-scale Mining, Tailings, etc! It's a big day for sustainability and ESG in the mining sector. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the most widely used sustainability reporting standards on the planet have just released a common standard for the mining industry. It's been in the works for some time. Here's a quick overview; 1. The Standard (GRI 14: Mining Sector 2024) applies to all organizations engaged in mining and quarrying, including exploration and extraction, primary processing, and related support services. 2. It provides a common set of metrics, based on the impacts of mining, that will result in consistent, comparable disclosures across the sector. 3. There are 25 topics to report on, three of which are new. Tailings management, artisanal and small-scale mining, and operating in conflict zones. 4. It incorporates expectations for site-level transparency on local environmental and community impacts. 5. It has been informed by IRMA Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance , ICMM, EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative), The Copper Mark, GISTM and the OECD. The Future of Mining Summit 2024. I was privileged and honored to represent my company, AMS- Perenti at the inaugural Future of Mining Summit 2024 Gaborone, under the theme “Building Competitive Global Players Of Evolving Industrial Challenge” The summit created a platform for key players in the mining industry to share ideas, collaborate, and exchange notes on pertinent industry issues. It was a converging point for mining industry captains, high-level government officials, policymakers, extractive industry thought leaders, investors, and ESG stakeholders to shape and chart a new path for the industry. The highly impactful engagements comprised of strategic keynote presentations, technical insights, and panel discussions on various topics throughout the two days. The Future of Mining Summit provided insights into the outlook of mining in Botswana and globally, future operational and business models, new technologies in mining, energy transition, safety and productivity, ESG, and the creation of new and safer jobs in the mining industry. The summit also discussed investments in exploration, discovery, project developments, and the building of new mines and expanding existing operations.
