Consistently implementing actions that contribute to the protection of the environment, our experts in Northern Greece carried out an in-depth cleaning in the Karabournaki beach in Thessaloniki, together with iSea NGO, as part of our CSR Days 2024. During the cleanup, our people collected more than 300 pieces of waste from the beach, weighing over 25 kg, with 97% of the waste being plastic. A huge thank you to all our people for dedicating their time and energy into such an important cause for our planet's future. #GrantThornton #CSRDays2024 #iSea

In cities worldwide, a quiet change is happening, led by those often ignored: #WASTEPICKERS. On March 1, International Waste Pickers Day, communities gather to recall the tragic events of 1992 in Colombia 🇨🇴 when waste pickers were #murdered. But amid the sadness, there’s also joy - a celebration of #strength, #unity, and the important role they play in protecting our environment. Throughout March, there are many activities as people from different backgrounds come together to honour these forgotten heroes. Discussions on recycling fill workshops and clean-up events ring with laughter and determination, and art shows shine with creativity using recycled materials. It’s a month-long tribute to those who turn the world’s trash into treasures, who change tragedy into success. International Waste Pickers Day isn’t just about cleaning up our neighbourhoods; it’s about recognizing the #humanity, #dignity, and importance of those who do this essential job. It’s about realizing that these groups of people are not just workers; they are #protectors of the environment, defenders of our planet’s future. So as we mark International Waste Pickers Day, let’s remember the hardships faced, the challenges overcome, and the victories achieved. Let’s stand together with #wastepickers everywhere, honouring their #strength, their #contributions, and their #unwavering #dedication to creating a cleaner, greener world for us all. Moreover, environmental justice demands that we acknowledge the vital role waste pickers play in sustainable waste management. The Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee (INC) 4 should seize the opportunity to recognize waste pickers’ rights, ensuring fair treatment, decent working conditions, and access to resources for their invaluable contribution to society. By elevating their status, #INC4 could be the game changer for these unsung heroes, fostering a more equitable and environmentally conscious future. #internationalwastepickersday #wastepickersrightsnow #inc4 #justtransition ©️ GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives) 📸 Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)

ENALEIA - Together With The Fishers 🐠 As part of our mission to revive our oceans, we’re delighted to be partnering with Enaleia, a Greek NGO dedicated to combatting plastic pollution by collaborating with fishers across the Mediterranean to collect ocean waste while they’re fishing. On our recent trip to Greece, our CEO Tom Cotter sat down with Enaleia founder, Lefteris Arapakis to discuss his journey and some of the challenges along the way. Check out this clip where Lefteris discusses “The Tipping Point” and how it snowballed their operation into what it has become today! #reviveouroceans #enaleia #plasticpollution #oceancleanup #plasticwaste #oceanwaste

Let's keep the #EU's waste collection ambition high! UNESDA has joined several industry stakeholders and NGOs in urging the French government to support #DepositReturnSystems (#DRS), ahead of today’s COREPER meeting and the EU Environment Ministers meeting on Monday. More specifically, we ask France – and the other EU Member States - to support the obligation to set up a DRS in each Member State and to only provide exemptions based on a 90% collection rate. We also call on them to remove the possibility to set up multiple DRS at a sub-national level. DRS have a key role to play in supporting Member States in achieving a #CircularEconomy for #BeveragePackaging. The reality speaks for itself: European countries with long-established DRS, such as the Nordics, usually report collection rates up to 95% and countries that have recently implemented DRS, including Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia and Malta, already see high collection rates (up to 90%). 🔎 Read the industry-NGO letter here (in French) 👉 https://lnkd.in/eCwgsmNM Boissons Rafraichissantes de France (BRF) Changing Markets Foundation Constellium La Boîte Boisson Maison des Eaux Minérales Naturelles (MEMN) Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) Minderoo Foundation Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE) Recircula Recycling Netwerk Benelux Reloop Polskie Stowarzyszenie Zero Waste #ClosingTheLoop #EUGreenDeal
