Automotive can be part of the solution… if it’s also part of the conversation! That’s why I was very pleased to meet both President of the European Council Charles Michel and EU Commissioner for Climate Wopke Hoekstra today and share our industry’s view with them in my role as European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) President. Building Europe’s industrial future in front of outstanding competitors won’t be a solo play but a team sport because our challenges cut across the traditional sectors and also require that the public authorities take a part in orchestrating the collective effort. Day after day, I can feel that this impression is gaining ground. Let’s now accelerate to come up with a real European 360° industrial strategy for automotive: ➡ A single entry point to assess all new regulations, putting all the stakeholders around the table, corporations, NGOs, scientists, etc., not to question the objective but to challenge how we get there! ➡ Reshape the regulatory calendar accordingly because 8 new regulations per year on average absorbing up to 25% of the industry’s R&D resources is not sustainable. ➡ Put technology neutrality at the core of Europe’s approach, letting the engineers innovate, because the enemy is the CO2, the noise, the pollution, not a technology or another! ➡ Encourage the definition of common standards, because it has the potential to create scale and speed, boosting Europe’s competitiveness. ➡ … and launch strategic initiatives along a value chain approach on key topics, fostering ecosystems for hydrogen, last-mile delivery EV solutions, small affordable EV competitive production, for example. Time to move on now, together! #ACEA #Europe #industry #teamsport

📑 ECTRI reply to the EC public consultation on the Car labelling – evaluation EU rules mandate the disclosure of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data for new cars sold or leased within the EU, enabling consumers to make informed decisions. With significant policy and market advancements since the last evaluation in 2016, the European Commission is currently reviewing the effectiveness of these regulations through a public consultation (19 March 2024 – 16 April 2024). Based on our members’ expertise in mobility behavior and sustainable transport, ECTRI encourages the European Commission to consider replacing the existing Directive with a Regulation that harmonizes #carlabelling across all member states. The key components of our proposal: 1️⃣ introducing a coloured code with A to G categories, similar to the one established in the Energy Efficiency Directive; 2️⃣ establish absolute CO2 emission values for each category; 3️⃣ establish regular revision of such emission values as way to keep fuel efficiency and CO2 emission reduction as an on-going objective for vehicle manufacturers; 4️⃣ extend labelling to new vans and to second-hand cars and vans; 5️⃣ include information and ideally labelling on pollutant emissions (NOX and PM), establishing consistent categories at the EU level to replace the multiplicity of emission thresholds currently applied in low-emission zones in the continent. By adopting these measures, we can empower consumers to make more informed choices, incentivize the automotive industry to prioritize sustainability, and contribute to the collective effort towards a greener, more sustainable future. #ECTRITF #TFEUPolicy #ECTRIreply #ECPublicConsultation #CarLabelling

Founder @Capsule Conseil, Strategic C-Suite Executive advisor, Public Affairs (EU, France), Growth Strategies.
#EU elections and the #mobility industry – "The role of political decision-makers is not to determine the choice of technology but to set a course, that of decarbonisation. It is then up to industry to choose the best technologies to achieve the objectives set by the legislator." At an event organised last week at the Paris City Bar Association (Maison du Barreau), Jean-Dominique Sénard, the emblematic President of the Board of Renault Group (the former President of Michelin), detailed the #Green agenda of the group : reduction of the #carbon footprint, safeguarding #biodiversity, #circular economy … Jean-Dominique Senard also questioned the all-electric vehicle "diktat" imposed by the « Fit for 55 » EU regulation, which bans the production of new #thermal vehicles by 2035. Under the required regulatory impact assessment, the carbon footprint should have been measured ‘throughout the vehicle's life cycle’ (‘from Tank to Wheel’), he said. The Group has deployed significant innovation capabilities over the past 5 years: ✅ Renault plans to move to 100% #electric production from 2030; ✅ Development of the latest generation thermal vehicles (with a 40% reduction in carbon consumption compared to a thermal vehicle from the 2000s and producing three times less nitrogen oxide); ✅ Vehicle refurbishment; ✅ Battery recycling; ✅ “Vehicle-as-a-Service” solutions, etc. At a time when hybrid warfare is taking over every field, particularly economic and technological, the transfers of value are decisive. With regard to the shift to all-electricity vehicles, China has a considerable lead in access to mines for the metals needed to produce electricity (60-70%) and in the refining (70-75%) of these metals. « We are exposing ourselves to our own vulnerabilities » said Jean-Dominique Sénard … and therefore to new strategic dependancies. Then there remains the thorny question of the cost for the consumer and the financing of these long-term investments. Who will pay for electric vehicles made in the EU that are more expensive than their non-EU competitors? The regulation includes a review clause that foresees that in 2026, the Commission will re-assess the progress made towards achieving the 2035 100% emission reduction targets. The #EPP has already committed to reintroducing the principle of technological neutrality. #technological neutrality #environmental transition

European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal #EUGreenDeal, for Interinstitutional Relations and #Foresight.
Critical raw materials are the fuel of the #EUGreenDeal and the key to a successful decarbonisation of European industry. If we want to be a climate-neutral and healthy planet, we have to mine in a sustainable way. And we need to be prepared. I discussed these matters with Peter Tom Jones, KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals - including responsible mining and refining and the business potential for industry in a decarbonised Europe. We have the technology and skills to do #sustainable mining in Europe, but to unlock its full potential we must showcase successful projects which inspire #investment. To build public trust we need to emphasise our ambitious #environmental and #health standards and show the tangible benefits that such projects bring to a community. Our goal is to build a #European value chain, encompassing extraction, refining, use and recycling. This will build trust in investors and improve access to raw materials. European industry is bringing down its carbon footprint and providing an unmatched level of employee protection. We need to protect this type of economy, protect #MadeinEurope.
