Now January is out of the way I’ve had some time to reflect on how this years started and how I want it to continue… Firstly, I passed my 1 year mark at BigCommerce and what a year it was 🙌🏼 Looking ahead, one of the most valuable things is simply being there in person with our partners. There's just something amazing about joining them in their offices, saying hi to their teams, and really connecting face-to-face. It was an awesome event and I was blown away by the setup at White Hart Lane. I can't imagine it's cheap, but it was really impressive - both in terms of the venue itself and also how the day ran. Kudos to the whole BigCommerce team for pulling that together. It was great to catch up with familiar faces like Mark Slocock, James Gurd, Jim Herbert, Theo Burns, Colin Stansbury and Oliver Cole and to make new connections - hey there Hannah Herlihy Lowe and Daniel Viniegra. I took some personal time to explore more of the world, but kept my eye on our favorite clubs, which have had quite a couple of weeks. The biggest news, of course, is that Costco is increasing membership fees for the first time in seven years, even as June sales continued to show strength. The news hit nearly simultaneously with reports that it will raise wages for its US, Canada, and Puerto Rico workers. Is one intended to fund the other? Given the club's consistent position that a positive trajectory in signups, renewals, and upgrades are the main barometer for whether to implement fee increases (and knowing Costco), it could very well be. https://lnkd.in/g5THA-EE Dominick Reuter https://lnkd.in/g-TNXA4u Sam's Club is meanwhile facing backlash for removing free shipping from its Plus member perks (a flat $8 fee now applies to orders under $50). The move could be part of a renewed push for new signups: the same announcement will allow Club members free curbside pickup on orders over $50. The club also has a new Refer a Friend promotion offering new Club memberships for 50% off. But it sparks that age-old question: is it better to reward existing members or attract new ones? Or does one lead to the other? McDonald's Loyalty Leap Launched in the summer of 2021, the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program is quickly becoming a pivotal element of the global giant's revenue strategy. Highlighted in the recent Q1 2024 Earnings report, an impressive $6 billion of McDonald’s system-wide sales—from both company-operated and franchise-operated restaurants—was attributed to the program. Market Expansion... The rapid expansion of MyMcDonald’s Rewards into new markets has become a key highlight in recent earnings reports. The program grew from just six* markets at the end of 2022 to fifty* by the close of 2023. With McDonald's already operating in 114*** countries, the potential for further growth in the coming years is significant. Surge in Active Membership... The number of active members soared from 50* million in a 90-day period at the end of 2022 to 150* million by the end of 2023. While entering new markets, the program looks to be successful in optimizing local marketing strategies. It will be interesting to know how these acquired cohorts transact in the multiple 90-day periods after acquisition. Enhanced Engagement and Contributions... Contributions from loyalty members to total system-wide sales increased from 15.5%** in 2023 to 20%** by Q1 2024 (& also trailing 12 months). Consistent growth in this metric will depend on McDonald’s ability to offer highly personalized pricing, promotions, and experiences. The program appears poised to possibly mirror the success seen by Starbucks - ~40% - 45% of sales driven by loyalty members. Member Spending... There is a shift in average spending/member from $68** in 2022 to $40** in 2023 over a 90-day period. As the program enters markets with varying purchasing power, this metric will be crucial to monitor. For context, $40 will equate to about 7 Big Macs in 90 days, and can give enough points to redeem for medium fries leaving 1000 points still in the wallet.
