Despite these achievements, the journey to gender equality is far from over. African women continue to face hurdles like gender-based violence, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and economic inequalities. But these challenges cannot dim their light. Youth organizations and women's rights groups are crucial allies in this fight, providing platforms for young women to lead and thrive. Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the start of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This year’s theme is ‘UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women & girls.’ It’s important we continue to not only push for the private sector and government to support organizations addressing this problem, but to also ensure the government implements policies that champion women’s rights and promote gender equality. Let’s ensure we raise our voices, stand as allies, support survivors, and hold perpetrators accountable. This International Day of Families, we are sharing insights from Dr Jemimah Njuki of UN Women. In her remarks, Dr. Njuki highlights that women spend 2.8 hours more daily on unpaid care work, limiting their participation in economic and social activities. Interestingly, transforming care systems can create 300M jobs–all while promoting gender equality and supporting climate action. Investing in childcare and women's empowerment is essential. Poverty is not gender-neutral, so neither can our response to it be.    We have a long history of advocating for EU and global policies to advance gender equality, but this is the first time we take this work to United Nations’ largest annual gathering on women’s empowerment, to give voice to European civil society in their fight towards gender equality.    This year's focus is on ending women's poverty.
