January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and this year marks just over 4 years since the Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative (CCEI) was launched; an ambitious global strategy set by WHO to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health problem. The conclusions of the 4-year Risk-Based Screening for Cervical Cancer (RISCC) consortium project are ready! The ESGO Prevention Committee has been a proud participant along with ESGO ENGAGe in the RISCC consortium, which received funding from the European Union’s Horizon2020 Framework Programme for Research & Innovation. The project brought together key researchers in the field of HPV, HPV screening, and HPV vaccination and aimed to develop & evaluate the first risk-based screening program for cervical cancer as well as provide open-source implementation tools, contributing to our common goal of the elimination of cervical cancer in Europe. Liver #cancer is the 13th most diagnosed cancer in the EU, and the 6th leading cause of cancer deaths, according to estimates from the European Cancer Information System.   It affects men more than women: they are twice more likely to both get liver cancer and die from it.   The good news is that liver cancer is one of the main cancers we can actually prevent, as it’s often caused by viral infections. In 2019, about 70% of liver cancers worldwide were attributable by viral infections like hepatitis B or C.   That's why Europe's Beating Cancer Plan aims to make it easier for people to - get vaccinated against hepatitis B, - and get treatments that can prevent cancer linked to hepatitis C, for which we have no vaccine. Cervical Cancer Awareness Month 2025 January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, an ideal chance for WHO and partners to raise awareness of cervical cancer and vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV), the main cause of cervical cancer. Together, we can strive to end cervical cancer within a few generations. This year, Cervical Cancer Awareness Month aims to highlight the importance of increasing access to HPV vaccines, regular screening, and state-of-the-art treatment for cervical cancer in its early stages. Our shared objective is to dramatically reduce the occurrence of cervical cancer by 2030 and to eliminate the disease as a public health problem by 2120. The world needs to pay more attention to cervical cancer. It is the:   🔵 4th most common cancer affecting women globally 🔵 6th most common cancer affecting women in the Eastern Mediterranean Region 🔵 13th most common cause of cancer death Cervical cancer can be cured if diagnosed early and treated promptly. It is essential women:  1.     Get informed – access information about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus and help educate other women about cervical cancer prevention and screening.  2.     Get screened – starting from the age of 30, get screened for cervical cancer every 5–10 years. 3.     Get vaccinated – girls between 9 and 14 years👧should receive one dose of HPV vaccine.
