Aviation is a clear and present indicator of the way the globe has established its response to meeting (or not) the Paris Climate Agreement. There is a limit to government and international policy action which can restrict an efficient pathway to decarbonisation. Aviation net zero future is critically dependent on a zero-emission energy revolution and commensurate institutional investment to meet the extreme shortage of “green” energy. We present our global perspective on how the City could hold the key to translating net zero leadership in the aviation and energy sectors into a real economic impact. The aviation sector faces significant challenges in curtailing its contribution to climate change. Pathways for changes in aviation’s greenhouse gas emissions vary, but in all cases, new fuels are called for in the coming decades. Without new fuels and/or demand-side measures aviation will rely on significant levels of designated carbon dioxide removals (CDR) to keep within global carbon budgets. It is necessary, therefore, to consider more radical options for decarbonising aviation. In collaboration with Aviation Environment Federation, Christopher Jones and Alice Larkin and I co-authored a report which considers the potential for ammonia as an alternative low-carbon fuel and as an energy carrier for hydrogen. Did you know that aviation not only has a climate impact through CO2 but also through so-called non-CO2 effects? Chapter 4.4 of the E-SAF study we conducted for Deutsche Aircraft explains these mechanisms with regard to the share of non-CO2 effects in the overall climate impact and the near ground pollutant emissions. These are largely caused by specific jet fuel constituents such as aromatics and sulphur. Overall, e-SAF can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions! Using the RED II and CORSIA methodologies, Liquefied Hydrogen (LH2) and Power-to-Liquids (PtL) produced from renewable electricity both already show well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions which are already significantly lower than those of fossil kerosene and crop-based biofuels. The abovementioned additional lower climate impact due to reduced non-CO2 effects further add to the benefit compared to drop-in sustainable aviation fuels compliant with current jet fuel standards . In a world of where Aviation is decarbonised mainly through SAF, these headlines on H2 powered aircraft are more seldom! A good layer of complexity for any airliner which is looking into Hydrogen aircraft will come along no doubt. But the more interesting it is for me to follow these type of news!

Exciting News for Sustainable Aviation! Following American Airlines' order of 100 hydrogen-electric engines and increased investment in ZeroAvia, the UK government has announced £10.5M in grant funding at the Farnborough Airshow this week. This funding will support ZeroAvia and a consortium in developing high-temperature fuel cells for planes carrying 40-80 passengers. NovAzure's view is that this advancement is crucial, as aviation accounts for 3.5% of global warming impacts, making it one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise. Progress in hydrogen technology is a highlight of Europe’s green agenda, despite the European Court of Auditors challenging the EU Commission's target of producing 10M tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. 🤔 Should the EU revise its targets or hold the line?
