Sustainable Development is, “development which meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” –The Brundtland report, 1987. The United Nations SDG primer course for me started as an endeavor to keep myself abreast of the current global machinery and system, but it turned out to be so much more. It was a rude awakening of sorts.
➡ It is happening, right here, right now. The United Nations 2030 Agenda consists of carefully curated 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which comprises of 169 targets. It is a goal like NO OTHER, and it is THE need of the hour. Our planet has been giving us signals, but unfortunately, we have a very small opportunity window left, owing to our own past mistakes. It is unsettling that 2030 is peeking from the horizon.
➡ Government bodies, Civil servants, Parliaments, Profit-oriented private businesses, Academia, you and me- everybody has a role to play. Just take a minute to go through the link https://lnkd.in/gEAJw_6S (below) to see how individual actions from remotest parts of our country are making a difference. I promise, you will be surprised and proud at the same time, as much as I was. Which is why the 2030 Agenda is so important, because it is not just a few policymakers, this is a target for each and every one of us.
➡ Leave no one behind- the UNDP made this the core value. We can’t afford to leave another few billion of our population behind again. We Indians suffice for one sixth of the human race. Our role, as a South Asian giant, is extremely significant. This objective belongs to everyone, from the Least developed countries (LDCs) to the small island nations who are now more prone to natural calamities due to climate change.
Our being online has given us immense data to create predictive models. But aggregation in these data models, is damaging and has to be rooted out. Disaggregating data based on different sections (net income, gender etc) of society should be used to get the actual picture. Sadly, major chunk of our population is still not online and devastatingly are excluded from all the data based plans and policies.
🌍 I am writing this post to appeal to my community and fellow military brothers and sisters who are in the process of joining or have already joined large private conglomerates/businesses. These days everything is linked to sustainability, not just production and consumption. For e.g. companies in supply chain greatly impact how we reuse and reduce our waste. Similarly, whatever be your role, just read about these SDGs and how you can do your bit for a greater good. The fine data models and graphs added by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, leaves a crude impact and is alarming to say the least. Any possible solution, in any capacity, will make the burden of our accountability easier to bear, for the sake of our future generations.
