Did you know there was a recent study in which 6-year-old girls and boys were asked to reward themselves with candy based on tasks they’d accomplished? Across the board, boys rewarded themselves more. Across similar studies in middle and high schools, boys paid themselves more by 68 percent. Joanne Lipman, bestselling author, award-winning journalist, and deputy managing editor for the Wall Street Journal, says it's an example of how women can often underestimate their professional worth. Lipman shared this and other insights during a workshop last week at the HCF headquarters about closing the gender gap in the workplace. The Hawai‘i Executive Collaborative, along with the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, the Holomūa Collective, and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, co-sponsored this workshop. This workshop featured an overview by Lipman on obstacles women confront in the workplace and best practices to overcome them, followed by a participatory workshop and discussion.
