Today is International Women in Engineering Day and we’re celebrating all the incredible women in the industry 👏 👉 There are around 936,000 women working in engineering roles in the UK 👉 This equates to 16.5% of the total engineering workforce 👉 Women earn about 25% of undergraduate engineering degrees worldwide 👉 Efforts such as the Women’s Engineering Society aim to increase the percentage of women working in engineering roles through advocacy and support programmes At Shawton Engineering, we believe everyone should have an opportunity to work in engineering, no matter their gender or background. As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we are reminded of the outstanding achievements of women engineers around the world and of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the engineering field. We asked Brittany Argueta, a Process Development Engineer for Harland, what being a woman in engineering means to her: "Being a woman in engineering means breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. It feels great being recognized for my work in the engineering field.

Today, on International Women in Engineering Day, we recognize the incredible achievements of women engineers globally and the strides we continue to make in this traditionally male-dominated field. Each day, I am inspired by the innovative spirit, resilience, and determination of my fellow female engineers. Although we have seen a significant increase in the number of women within the sector, currently women only represent 16.5% of engineers within the energy industry. Some of the strongest characters I know, and have worked with (in the Royal Navy and on this side of the fence), are women that have followed the engineering pathway. Whether that be Electrical, Mechanical, Weapons, Marine, Chemical... the list is endless, and each of them are key cogs in this machine. To mark International Women in Engineering Day, see our Director General, Damien Owens, article on the importance of encouraging more women to participate in engineering, featured in Friday’s Irish Independent According to a recent study, carried out by Ipsos B&A on behalf of Engineers Ireland 39% of women say they do not view engineering as a suitable career, compared to just 29% of men. Similarly, over a third of women respondents said they would not consider the profession if starting a career or pursuing a career change. We can and must forge a path that encourages more women into our industry.
