Why is development turnover so high in nonprofits? Did you know the average tenure for someone in a nonprofit development role is just 18 months? One of my clients shared this stat recently, and it explains why so many nonprofits are actively recruiting for positions like Major Gift Officers, Directors of Development, and Chief Advancement Officers. The reasons for this high turnover are varied: burnout from constant fundraising pressure, compensation gaps compared to the for-profit sector, unrealistic goals, and limited resources. If you're currently in a development role, or if you're a nonprofit leader hiring for one, I'd love to hear your thoughts! What challenges have you faced, and how have you tackled them? Let's start a conversation and learn from each other. #peoplemattermost #nonprofits #development #advancement

"We've returned to work, but we are working differently." We are managing geographically diverse teams. Team members may have complex health challenges + family needs. In nonprofit administration, the flexibility required to handle these new work challenges is costing MORE - while at the same time the old trope of "keep administrative costs low" continues. Nonprofit leader and Hiver Kimberly Lewis had so many insights to contribute to the conversation. In her decades long career leading nonprofit organizations (who have sometimes been social enterprises) she feels that successfully supporting staff while also performing your mission has never been more of a challenge. Nonprofiteers, particularly in Kimberly's organization Goodwill Industries of East Texas, are still doing the work 1-1, face to face. Touching hands and touching lives (with degrees and certifications required). Talented, passionate people with the right education are becoming harder to find - which means providing the needed services in a regulated industry becomes impossible. Hands up Hivers, how many leaders feel work has become more complex post-COVID?? #leadership #returntowork #nonprofit #soocialimpact

Relationships first professional adept at prioritizing multiple high-stakes projects with a proven track record of building trust with a diverse group of stakeholders.
I’m back with another paragraph from a job posting I came across last week. Unlike the one I posted on Saturday, I don’t have mixed feelings about this one. I am very clear where I stand. Spoiler alert: I don’t like it. I still welcome opinions - constructive dialogue is how we can advance the sector and these conversations are essential if we want to move from transactional to transformational. I understand there are many well-meaning board members, non-philanthropic facilitator (aka fundraising) staff, and others who would see no problem with the idea of bringing donors from your old job with you to your new role. It is up to those in the field to explain why the idea is unethical and not a good long-term strategy for the organization. In addition to the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ Code of Ethics stating that donor information is the property of the organization and not the individual, there are other reasons that I find this a complete misalignment of values between myself and the organizations that include lines like this in a job description. A philanthropic facilitator (fundraiser) and donor relationship should be built on trust, accountability, transparency, and a shared goal related to the organization's cause. The donor is giving to the organization to make positive change for something they are passionate about. An organization willing to hire someone who will do this should prepare for the new hire to do the same when they leave, which is not a good strategy for long-term success and sustainability. And, as we know, that could be as soon as 18 months later. #philanthropy #nonprofits #relationships #strategy
