#Covid affects our cognitive ability 👀
Research is showing that being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can impact our brain health in many ways.
While brain fog is a common symptom that causes forgetfulness and inability to focus; COVID-19 can also lead to an array of other problems such as headaches, seizure disorders, strokes, sleep problems, and tingling and paralysis of the nerves.
A large epidemiological study showed that people who had COVID were at an increased risk of cognitive deficits, such as memory problems.
Another study done in 2023 with people who had mild to moderate COVID infections showed significant prolonged inflammation of the brain and changes that are comparable with 7 years of brain aging.
A new study assessed cognitive abilities such as memory, planning and spatial reasoning in nearly 113,000 people who had previously had COVID-19. The researchers found that those who had been infected had significant deficits in memory and executive task performance. They found that deficits equivalent to six IQ points were detectable a year or more after infection! Study 🔗in comments below.
It is going to be critical to identify who is most at risk here, as well as obtain a better understanding of the measurable impact of these trends - especially in children, young adults and working-age adults.
