✈ 🌿Sustainable Aviation Fuel: Professor Jerry D Murphy, MaREI and University College Cork talks about the critical issues in the decarbonisation of aviation on RTE's Today with Claire Byrne: ◾ Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) cannot eliminate all non-CO2 warming ◾ There is insufficient biofuel resources to replace jet fuel. Need to explore options such as Electrical Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF) ◾ Future plane tickets could become more expensive 🎧 Listen here: https://lnkd.in/eu8esBTH #SustainableAviationFuel #Decarbonisation #UCCResearch #SustainableTransport

Our recent post on Sustainable Aviation Fuel demonstrates the aviation industry's key to reducing carbon emissions. If you're curious about the benefits and challenges our industry faces with SAF, we've got answers for you. BENEFITS to SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL: ✅ Compatibility with standard jet engine and infrastructure ✅ Fewer CO2 emissions ✅ Greater production and implementation flexibility CHALLENGES to SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL: 👉 The large and growing size of the jet fuel market 👉 The relatively high cost of SAF as compared to petroleum-based Jet A fuel 👉 The burden on airlines to implement SAF in an emission-constrained future with lack of other viable alternatives Learn more on our blog at https://zurl.co/DSa8! #Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has become an important topic for the #aviation industry. Offtake agreements currently account for a total of around 40 billion liters of SAF in volume worldwide until 2022, with the number of announcements soaring over the last couple of years. Increasing offtake volumes are driven both by market demand to reach environmental goals, such as the aviation industry’s target of #NetZero by 2050, and stricter regulation internationally. A clearer understanding of where investments are needed can be gained by considering the different pathways through which sustainable aviation fuel can be produced, as each has its own relative strengths, weaknesses, and cost structures. We explore steps to overcome roadblocks and enable the ramp-up of sustainable aviation fuel in our latest Strategy& study. Explore the findings here: https://bit.ly/3uf6CCz #IndustryinFocus #COP28

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is critical if we are to decarbonise travel. But finding feedstock is going to be the challenge unless a "Power to liquids" (PtL) approach is taken. And if it is, we're going to need *LOTS* more renewable power as well as massive investment.

Why investment in aviation decarbonization is important to the environment? According to current estimates, aircraft contributes 12% of the global transportation-related CO2 pollution. It is significant to highlight that flights longer than 1,500 kilometers account for about 80% of aviation's CO2 emissions. Following the epidemic, carbon dioxide emissions increased once more in tandem with rising passenger and flight numbers, according to aviation industry indicators. This suggests that new technologies that have the potential to greatly improve emissions reduction must be introduced. According to European Commission decarbonization scenarios, the Green Deal should result in 89% lower emissions. While a peak in emissions is anticipated by 2025, most of the reduction in emissions is anticipated to occur after 2030, with a 61% decline from 2030 to 2050. To replace aircraft and introduce new technology, significant investments of EUR 378 billion will be required between 2020 and 2050. This investment might result in increased industry efficiency and reduced operating costs, which could offset the rise in fuel prices brought on by the increased use of SAF.
