Energy Vault has partnered exclusively with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to develop the next generation of deployable gravity #energy storage (GES) structures. SOM, a global leader in architecture and engineering, will be the exclusive partner responsible for integrating Energy Vault’s #GES into tall buildings in urban environments. This partnership includes designing skyscrapers equipped with motorized systems to elevate massive blocks during periods of low energy demand. These blocks store energy, which is converted back into electricity during peak demand. Carbon sink First full-height timber wind turbine opens in Sweden The world's first full-scale timber wind turbine has started turning in Sweden, with a tower built by wood technology company Modvion. The 105-metre-tall tower, located in the region of Skara, is Modvion's first commercial wind turbine tower, and follows on from a smaller 30-metre-high demonstration project the company completed in 2020. While its rotor blades and generator hub are made of conventional materials, the tower is made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL), a type of engineered wood made of thin veneer strips glued together and often used for beams and load-bearing building structures. The company says that this type of wood is not only strong enough to withstand the forces of a turning turbine, it is much more environmentally sustainable to build with than the currently used steel. While wind power plays an important role in providing the world with green renewable energy, there are still ample carbon emissions created during their construction — in part because of the steel towers. Modvion describes its wood towers as reducing the carbon emissions from wind turbine construction by over 100 per cent, due to the combination of a less emissions-heavy production process and the carbon storage provided by trees.

The construction sector is looking towards renewable energy systems such as wind, solar and geothermal, as a means of improving energy efficiency and minimising its carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy systems into construction activities, project managers can reduce their dependency on traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear. In addition to integrating these into the building designs, renewable energy systems can also be used to power construction sites. Solar panels, for instance, can be installed on rooftops to generate electricity, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering long term utility costs. This can be especially beneficial for construction sites within remote areas or in areas which have limited access to traditional energy sources. To further support the sustainability outcomes aimed for by renewable energy sources, the construction sector can introduce the use of sustainable building materials such as wood, recycled steel and bamboo, which can support the buildings receive sustainability certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Established Environmental Assessment Method). The use of renewable systems in construction has a range of far reaching benefits that extend beyond the energy savings that are experienced within the projects and buildings themselves. The use of these system can support reductions in the carbon footprint of the development projects in question, thus contributing to emissions savings which support global climate change goals. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources can also improve the reliance and resilience of construction sites as they can leveraged as a form of backup power during emergencies. For instance, batteries or pumped hydro storage can be used as substitute for primary power sources during a power outages to ensure that buildings do not experience experience downtimes. This ensures that operations can be maintained and prevents safety hazards. A further benefit afforded by the introduction of renewable energy systems in the construction sector is that it enables job creation and stimulates economic growth. Wooden wind turbines? Why not?! Swedish start-up Modvion has achieved a pioneering feat by constructing the world's tallest wooden turbine tower, standing at 150m (492ft). The turbine utilses laminated veneer lumber (LVL) made from spruce for its thick walls, offering an innovative alternative to steel towers due to the renewable materials that it consists of. Modvion's tower-building approach involves stacking smaller, easily transported modules, a method they believe will enable the construction of taller towers in challenging locations. The use of wood instead of steel reduces the carbon footprint of the turbines, arguably making them carbon-negative as the carbon absorbed by the trees during their lifespan remains stored in the wood.
