Hillcrest supports Career Ready launch event in Dundee Last week staff from across Hillcrest proudly attended the Career Ready launch event at the Invercarse Hotel in Dundee. The event was an opportunity for our mentors to meet their young mentees and fellow mentors, get to know them and discuss their hopes and aspirations for the next two years. The Career Ready programme connects young people with employers and mentors to develop workplace skills, confidence and help them prepare for their future careers. Graeme Dey MSP, Minister for Further and Higher Education opened the event with reflections on his early career and words of encouragement. Attendees also heard from Career Ready alumni Aizah from Harris Academy and Andrew McFarlane from Aviva, who shared how the programme transformed their personal and professional journeys. Hillcrest mentors Fiona Morrison, Robyn Rae and Tracey McKay met their mentees, collaborated on activities and shared their enthusiasm for supporting young people. Brighton and Hove Clinic recently hosted a careers networking event for its students. The event was organised by Elev8Careers, a local organisation which provides a bespoke careers education, information, advice and guidance service to the school. The event aimed to inspire and broaden students' understanding of different pathways and careers, and to develop their employability skills such as communication and networking. This informal event encouraged students and industry professionals to engage in conversations about different career pathways, and the ‘guess my job’ activity was a resounding success!

Very sound advice and not just for early careers.
I’m extremely proud of AtkinsRéalis’ track record of recruiting and developing early careers talent, so it’s always great to be part of our annual Early Careers Celebration event which marks the end of structured training for graduates and apprentices across the UK and Ireland. But the event also marks the beginning of exciting careers in an industry that can take you to so many places and make such a difference to the world around us. And for those embarking on the next stage of their early careers, I offered this advice: 🔸 Look for experiences, not just promotions (they will come). 🔸 Enjoy your technical work and don’t rush to be in ‘management’ (this will also come if you want it). 🔸 Make sure you understand how finance works, be that at project or business level. 🔸 Try new things: making sure you stand on the shoulders of giants by tapping into the incredible expertise across the organisation. 🔸 Raise issues and problems - with solutions. Always try to be a solutions provider. But, most importantly: take ownership of your career and drive it forward with energy, curiosity and determination. #earlycareers #graduates #apprentices

After chatting with 900 students, I was definitely in need of a quiet moment and a cup of tea to recharge and mostly reflect on the day (as I always do)! 😅 Olena did absolutely brilliantly with engaging students and sharing her own experience as a student, undertaking a placement year with GA. We visited St. Benedict's Catholic College and met a diverse group of enthusiastic and engaging students. They came prepared with questions about career pathways in the railway industry, average salary expectations, and the grades needed to succeed and progress. There are a few things I continued to mention throughout the day when asked about progression within the company and how to get to the top. Thank you to Katy, GA People Director’s, inspiring presentation at the recent GA Careers event. I reiterated the message about the squiggly career path. If you don't know what it is, please do check out Ted Talk: "Why squiggly careers are better for everyone". I kept emphasising the importance of exploring and continuing to learn and develop through career opportunities that they may not have even heard of or considered before. This will allow for more learning and growth through a squiggly career path. When talking about grades, my message was about grades being a factor if you choose an academic route after GCSEs. However, I wanted to make sure that children are aware that they all have something to offer. Quite often, it is more about an individual's ability and eagerness to learn new skills, and less about the grades…they just don't know it yet. Everyone creates their pathway if they are given opportunities. I know it, my squiggly career journey took me from being an au pair to retail management and finally to HR where I've met my mentors (Gavin Dunn FCIPD and Dawn thank you!) who helped me to shape and find my passion for working with people, making a difference, and to support young people's first steps into their career journey through Early Careers programmes and Apprenticeship opportunities. The best part of what I do is seeing those early stages of learning, personal development and professional growth. I am pleased that my squiggly career led me to Greater Anglia. #proudtobehare #earlycareers

So many people are still buzzing from last week's Career Development Association Australia National Conference in Melbourne 🔥 As this little snippet from Lucy Sattler's packed-out ballroom explains, we need to get young people to be thinking WAY WIDER than the 'same 10 jobs' they always think of when they're challenged. 50% of students aspire to just 1% of the jobs available out there (simply because they don't know of many others), it's any wonder why they end up choosing courses of study that aren't right for them. Or start a career they don't enjoy. Lucy's presentation about the CADI #CareerClusters was incredibly well received last week, and that's because it's an easy way for everyone in education to talk about the world of work. And it's free. The only problem I've got now is getting so many new schools and career practitioners up-to-speed on delivering it! (Thankfully, that's easy for them to do 😉 ) Check out a little of Lucy's talk below: #SearchForTheCareerClusters #careers #CDAA #pathways #careerdevelopment #cadiclusters #studyworkgrow #CareerEducation #schoolcounselor #careersadvisor #careercounselor #highschool #hr

The first Highland-wide virtual jobs fair held last month has proved to be a hit with participants and businesses. The week-long virtual event, which was delivered by the Local Employability Partnership for the West – The Highland Council, Skills Development Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Developing the Young Workforce and UHI North, West and Hebrides was timed to coincide with Scottish Careers Week 2024. Chair of Highland Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Cllr Ken Gowans, said: “We would like to thank all the participants and all the businesses who took part. I’d also like to especially thank the Developing the Young Workforce team for their role in engaging with employers. “I am pleased that the feedback has been very positive. The flexible approach of hosted on-line sessions proved popular, with people able to take part from the comfort of their own home. It was a great opportunity to showcase the wide range of opportunities there are for people to develop and learn new skills and the full-time and part-time opportunities businesses have, along with apprenticeship schemes and initiatives to attract seasonal and year-round workers.” Over 200 people registered to take part ahead of the event. All of the sessions attracted a steady flow of participants over the week, 246 attendances in total, with many choosing to take part in more than one of the on-line sessions hosted by the participating businesses. Seventeen employers took part including Torbhaig Distillery, Carr Gomm, NRS Dounreay, Sheil Buses, BEAR Scotland, Balfour Beatty plc, The Highland Council, O’Brien Recycling Ltd, Royal Air Force (RAF), ICAS, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Aurora Energy, NHS Highland, Wills Bros Group Civil Engineering, Cross Reach, Meallmore Limited and Key Housing. Following on from the success of the event, the Council’s employability team are looking to run another virtual jobs fair from the 17 – 21 March 2025. If employers or job seekers are interested in taking part in the event, they should contact employability@highland.gov.uk or check the Work.Life.Highland website (https://lnkd.in/eW_mC59T) for updates.
