Internships on offer!   Property Needs You Challenge - https://lnkd.in/eJcwF8un   Property Needs You is a collaboration of the 12 real estate consultancies, whose aim is to inspire, educate and encourage talent into property careers. The challenge asks young people - aged 13-21 - to submit design ideas for a local space in their town, city, school or neighbourhood that would benefit from a makeover and design thinking. All types of spaces – including buildings, parks, schools, streets and stations – can become the focus of the design with entrants able to portray their vision in a variety of formats, from sketches to mood boards, virtual creations to 3D models.   As part of the application, entrants are asked why they chose the particular space to redesign, and for their vision of what the space could become. Alongside the 5 internships on offer to winners aged 16 and above, 3 runner up prizes include school/college workshops.    The firms backing the challenge are: Allsop LLP, Avison Young, BNP Paribas Real Estate, Carter Jonas. CBRE, Colliers, Cushman & Wakefield, Gerald Eve, JLL, Knight Frank, Lambert Smith Hampton, Savills   Hebe Williams, Graduate Recruitment Manager at Savills, said: “The idea behind the challenge is to encourage young people to think creatively about their local environment, and a particular space they’ve chosen to redesign, thinking about the potential of the space. In particular, thinking about what it could do and who could use it, and the impact that could have on their life and the lives of others.    “Young people are responsible for the built environment of the future, from where we live to where we go to school, work and play. The challenge is a chance for entrants to really consider the role they could play in positively influencing the built environment, local communities and ultimately, people’s lives. I had an incredible internship experience at Equity Residential! While interning at The Clarendon, and The Reserve at Clarendon Center, I gained invaluable knowledge and skills in property management, including using property management software, managing tenant relations, overseeing building maintenance, and gaining insights into budgeting and finances. I'm particularly proud of conducting a competitor analysis, which helped me develop strong research and analytical skills and provided valuable insights into market trends. I also enjoyed learning more about residential and retail properties. I'm looking forward to applying what I've learned in my future career! 🌟 Reflecting on My First Week at the Capital Markets Group Internship at JLL in Austin. My first week with the Capital Markets Group at JLL in the Austin office has been incredibly successful and enriching! This dynamic market, particularly in Austin and San Antonio, has given me the opportunity to dive into multifamily projects and industrial deals. Throughout this week, I’ve: - Gained insights into the deal processes from start to close - Shadowed the underwriting of deals and identified key metrics - Learned about loan and debt eligibility guidance - Contributed to pitch decks by working on market indicators - Assisted in pulling out comps for deals - Engaged in meaningful conversations with Casey Wenzel and CW Sheehan in separate coffee chats, during which I gained insights on their career paths, ambitions, interests in CRE, their advice for a successful internship experience, etc. What stands out the most is the team culture—an amazing, fun, and beautiful blend of unique, smart individuals. Their curiosity and willingness to share knowledge made my first week unforgettable. Tips & Tricks for the First Week: - Take Time to Adjust: Meet people and get comfortable with the new environment. - Don't Stress Over Information Overload: Ask questions, even the simplest ones. I’ve learned that there's no such thing as a stupid question. - Shadow and Learn: Don’t hesitate to ask to duplicate someone’s work to understand the process better. This week we welcomed 80 summer interns into our Capital Markets business, representing the top 1% selected from over 6,000 applicants! Some of my most valuable experiences came from my internships, shaping not only my professional life but also my personal journey.   During my first one at Arthur Andersen (at the time part of the Big 5!), I discovered two things: that public accounting wasn't for me, but that I had a passion for client management. This realization allowed me to shift full focus to business and finance. The following summer, my interest in technology and finance was sparked during my Hewlett-Packard internship, but I realized I was seeking a more entrepreneurial environment.   The final piece of the puzzle was my first job, a short run at tech start-up ReplayTV at the end of the tech boom in ‘99. This was followed by a great opportunity at a high growth start-up, Good Technology. However, I ultimately decided tech was not my passion and shifted my sights to commercial real estate. With the invaluable support of my mentors at Good Technology (thanks Danny Shader, Joel Jewitt), I wrapped up my role there and moved to Dallas to pursue CRE.   Without these formative experiences, I wouldn't have discovered my passion, and it’s why I love welcoming new interns to our program at JLL. We are hiring more interns now at Candela and let me tell you upfront that these internships are not for everyone. It will be a roller coaster ride and if you don’t enjoy roller coasters then you should not get on them. There will be no formal training period, from Day1 you will be given real work to do and real and practical problems to solve, and you will be given an opportunity to test your intellectual and creative limits while we still give you lots of opportunities to fail safely, ask lots of questions, learn and collaborate. Remember that our goal is to help you gain multi-dimensional skill sets that we believe would put you on an accelerated career path. Each person in our company is like a mini startup, you build products, test products, market products, support and even sell your products and through that process you learn so many things that would sometimes take decades to learn in larger companies. Last week, the interns wrapped up a 10-week internship program here on the JLL @ Capital One Account. After a few days to process the experience, some reflections I had: 1. This was the most rewarding experience of my career - from resume to interview to hiring to managing. This experience afforded me management experience as well as an opportunity to share my knowledge and learn from the next generation of top talent. 2. The future is bright! I managed one intern but interacted with many of them. They brought fresh energy, perspectives, and solutions. 3. I can do something I never thought I could do. I always shied away from being a people manager. I did not think it was for me or that I could be successful at it. I’ve learned that I think it’s time to reevaluate my goals and career path. If you have a chance to become an intern manager, I highly recommend it!
