Promoting circularity and decarbonization is key to boosting the building of today and tomorrow. Almost 96% of our concrete is manufactured with Susterra cement, which has a lower carbon footprint, reducing its CO2 emissions by up to 25% compared to products manufactured with CEM I 52.5 R reference cement in 2020. In addition, we also incorporate in the manufacturing process the maximum amount of recycled aggregates allowed by current law, giving a second life to construction materials. During my time in the real estate industry I always felt that the impact but also possible value of #performancematerials regarding total cost of ownership and emissions throughout the lifecycle got massively neglected! Especially, in the context of sustainability materials (particularly #concrete and #steel) can play such a vital role and even serve as a permanent #CO2sink.

A new study finds that using concrete as a carbon sink could capture two gigatonnes of CO2 per year, equivalent to 77% of annual emissions from cement production around the world. The white paper by sustainability consultant Tunley Environmental notes that carbonation of concrete also boosts its compressive strength. We are glad to see this validation of CarbonCure’s commercialized technologies for lower carbon concrete - CarbonCure Ready Mix and CarbonCure Reclaimed Water - and in particular the opportunity for our recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) technology, now in advanced development in our lab.
