As we recognize Black History Month, we celebrate the contributions of African Americans who shaped York County and beyond, in all periods of U.S. history — including the history being made even today. What will you do, this month and year-round, to recognize Black history?

We all know that February is Black History Month, but did you know that the celebration was first expanded to a month in 1976, during the United States bicentennial celebration? President Gerald R. Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, fifty years after the first celebration (which was only a week long), was the first Black History Month. Since then, each American president has issued Black History Month proclamations while the association that first proposed the celebration—now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH)—continues to promote the study of Black history all year round. As we reflect on Black History Month, let's remember: celebrating Black history isn't confined to a single month. At the start of this Black History Month, we embrace a spirit of gratitude, celebration, and respect. Black history is made each and every day—may we cultivate an intentional focus on and deepening awareness of Black history that persists throughout the year. As Rev. Dr. Jessica Chapman Lape observed during last year’s Black History Month chapel, “There are so many beautiful stories needing to be told, and we need the chance to hear them.” For those aspiring toward allyship, we invite you to ask yourself: Whose experiences are you centering? Whose voices are you listening to? How might you take action to ensure Black history in and around your communities is known and celebrated?
