Your team is most likely already diverse, even if consists of Finns only. 😱 Last week I watched a panel discussion on the topic of "Paradox of Diversity and Talent" organized by Nordic Inclusify ry. There were a lot of different insights and angles to look at the topic voiced. My favourite one was the one in the headline. If your organization is interested in the topic of diversity, you don't have to start from hiring someone new for that. Your team is most likely already diverse, even if Finns-only. Start from supporting and embracing that existing diversity. It might help you to understand specific steps and also get the feeling of how it is to actually support different employees with different needs. The simplest example I can give is menstruation talk at work. For example, agree in advance on whether one can work from home on the first days of their period. Make sure the office toilet has menstruation supplies in case of unexpected period. Etc. You name it! Destigmatizing periods as a thing to consider HR-wise at work is something I've been personally interested in exploring. In my opinion, within the Finnish companies, that change is easy to make and all team members will only benefit from understanding that part of life better. A weird thing happened when I tried to write our International Women's Day post: (Hi, this is Riven by the way! It feels weird to say I'm taking over the account that I always run to say this, but just know that this is coming from a person and not from a nebulous 'brand voice'!!) I asked the team what company policies best supported them as women, and some of us genuinely struggled to answer. For the best reason: "I don't have to think about how things are affecting me as a woman, I can just get on with my job". We have free sanitary care in our gender-neutral bathrooms and emergency chocolate in the office at all times, so no one feels like they need to hide the fact they have periods. We have flexible working hours and a 4 day work week, so no one has to prioritise work over being a parent, partner, or just dealing with life admin. We have a town council, where we can actively discuss anything that needs improving, and where we know the leadership team will listen and sort things out quickly. We have career pathways designed to help women progress the way they want to, so we all get to thrive on our paths. We have seriously impressive and capable women to look up to in our leadership team, who we can trust to be our mentors and our champions. And most of all we get actively encouraged to be ourselves, by the company and by each other. So no one feels like they have to censor themselves or put on a professional mask that hides their motherhood, gender expression, sexuality or neurodiversity. Our needs are met, so we don't have to think about them. We can just focus on doing the best job we can do, and helping each other out. It shouldn't feel like a privilege to get to work in an environment like this, but it does. This SHOULD be the norm. I totally get that it's not. There's still tons of work to be done to improve things for women, and I can promise you that each of my coworkers are fighting for those improvements on their own chosen battlegrounds. But today I want to celebrate the women that I get to work with, the team that powers Lunio, and all the thoughtful policies that mean we can just get on with it and smash our targets. Because this is what investing in women looks like. Happy #InternationalWomensDay!!

The ‘In Her Name’ campaign by Unilever's LUX aims to change the way women are named by creating 100 names reflecting the essence of femininity today, drawing inspiration from classical literature, positive connotations, and the evolving landscape of societal development. “I feel like I'm one of the people where I think of myself as just kind of a workhorse, right? I hardly ask for help. I'm not one of those people that make waves in organizations. Usually, when I go in, I do the work, and that's it. I do my work. I do my job, I fulfill my commitment, I'm successful, and then I move on.” Does this sound familiar to you? Because it is a recurring trend that we hear on many of my onboarding calls with members, something we have come to know as ‘Tiara Syndrome’ - a term that refers to what seems to be a female tendency to work hard, to keep her head down and not to push herself forward for reward or recognition. Many AAPI women, such as Rin, have dealt with this because of our culture and how we were raised. Unfortunately, as a result, we as women sometimes ignore a lot of other opportunities to grow in terms of self-reflection and finding our authentic selves. We are so excited to welcome Rin Chon to The Authentic Asian community! Rin Chon's full bio: Rin Chon is a talent consultant who has over 20 years of experience partnering with technology companies across diverse industries. She has been able to navigate her expertise in recruiting and her passion for helping people into a successful career. She has worked with start-up founders to launch their companies to hyper-growth start-ups. Rin’s background and experience span many different industries, ranging from fintech to health, security, and data.
