We are one of 108 NSW organisations and groups who have made a joint submission with #RaiseTheAgeNSW in #NSWPol to the NSW Government Inquiry into community safety in regional and rural communities. We all want communities to be safer. We’re calling on the NSW Government to: - Resource and support Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations to work with First Nations children, families, and communities. - Invest in services that prevent crime from the start. - Fund targeted services and interventions that help kids learn to be accountable, and do better, when they go off track. - Be guided by evidence and #RaiseTheAgeNSW from 10 to at least 14 without exception. The group backing the submission is diverse, and includes Aboriginal Community-Controlled Organisations, peak bodies, large charities, small community and place-based organisations, and influential and respected voices and experts from across NSW and Australia. Cara Varian CEO, NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) says, "We all want communities to be safe, and we need to keep kids out of the criminal system. A purely punitive system does not work. We require a holistic approach that invests in critical community services that prevent crime from the start. Ensuring that services such as youth and family support services, homelessness, and mental health are funded adequately and available to all communities in regional and rural NSW will help kids get the support they need to thrive." Happy #InternationalYouthDay! 🎉 Today, we celebrate our young people's strength, resilience, and creativity. But also bring to light the severity of youth homelessness. As of 2022/2023... ➡️ 135,800 16-24-year-olds were homeless or at risk of homelessness in the UK ➡️ 1 in 52 young people are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the UK ➡️ 67% of cases of homelessness in England were not successfully prevented or dealt with ➡️ this is a 5% increase from the previous year ➡️ 54% of these cases were as a result of family or friends no longer being willing or able to accommodate ➡️ 11% of these cases were as a result of domestic abuse Every day, alongside loads of other incredible charities, organisations and people, we are fighting to put an end to homelessness once and for all. That's why we need you.. our investors, partners and champions! So, to all the youth out there: keep shining bright and never stop dreaming!

Today is World Homeless Day, a moment to raise awareness and reflect on the urgent need to support those without a safe and stable place to call home. Having worked in the homelessness sector for nearly seven years, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges and vulnerabilities that so many people face daily. Every story is unique, but the common thread is the impact of compassion, support, and action in helping individuals regain stability and dignity. At Emmaus Merseyside we are committed to providing not just shelter, but also the resources and guidance needed for long-term recovery and reintegration. However, homelessness is a community issue, and we need more than just organizations working in isolation — we need everyone to engage, whether through awareness, donations, volunteering, or simply offering a listening ear. Today, let’s recognize the humanity of those who are too often overlooked, and commit to creating pathways to a more secure future for all. Together, we can make a difference, as nobody chooses homelessness. #WorldHomelessDay #EndHomelessness #SupportLocalCharities #CommunityAction #Merseyside

📢Government figures released today by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities showed fewer people were sleeping rough in Coventry and Warwickshire last year – a decrease of 4% from 2022. 📉The drop – from 37 to 34 people – may be thanks to recent hard work by local authorities and homelessness organisations, but it is likely that hidden homelessness persists. Today’s figures show what can be achieved when financial resources are made available, and local authorities and homelessness charities pull together. However, this isn’t a moment to sit back and celebrate. Homelessness is still all around us and so much of it is hidden. With the continuing cost-of-living crisis, many people are living in insecure or unsuitable places, crashing on sofas, or doing whatever they can to stay sheltered through the winter. These people would not have been included in the numbers because they aren’t visibly sleeping out in the open. ➡️https://lnkd.in/ed27dKEy

Charity - Fostering Hope and Dignity,New Equal World! September 5th marks the International Day of Charity, a day dedicated to recognizing the selfless efforts of individuals like Mother Teresa, who embodied the spirit of humanitarianism. Mother Teresa's tireless work with the poor, sick, and marginalized inspires us to acknowledge the transformative power of charity. Charity is not just an act of kindness, but a fundamental aspect of human life. It fosters empathy, compassion, and unity, bridging gaps between communities and individuals. Through charity, we can: - Alleviate suffering and poverty - Provide hope and dignity to those in need - Promote social justice and equality - Strengthen global solidarity As we honor Mother Teresa's legacy, let us embrace the values of charity and compassion. Let us strive to make a difference in the lives of others, just as she did. President and CEO of United Way of Calgary and Area - improving lives and building strong communities.
Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Thank you Meaghon Reid of Vibrant Communities Calgary (Stewards of Enough for All) for joining me in what needs to be done to eliminate poverty in our communities. There’s so much power in partnership and investing in each other. United we can address short-term needs and create long-term solutions for Calgarians. The face of poverty is changing. Poverty is increasingly hidden, and with rising costs for housing, food and other basic needs, more and more families are pushed to the brink of financial instability. Last year, 28% of households with children couldn’t afford healthy food and 29% of families sometimes skip meals. Everyone can help with small acts of kindness, whether it’s lending a hand to a neighbour or donating to United Way of Calgary and Area's Community Impact Fund, whether individually or through corporate programs. Any amount has the power to make a meaningful impact. A contribution of $25 can provide meals for up to 10 seniors living on fixed incomes, while $100 can offer crucial support to individuals as they move into stable housing. Join calgaryunitedway.org and ensure #NoOneLeftBehind. #PovertyEradication
Today, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we reflect on the changing face of poverty in Calgary. Rising costs have made it less visible, but it remains an urgent issue. While homelessness continues to be a concern, many individuals now struggle quietly behind closed doors. Together, we can make a difference. By uniting as a community and supporting one another, we can create pathways out of poverty for everyone. Whether it's helping a neighbour, volunteering, or donating essential items, every small act counts. Let's continue the fight to uplift those in need. Learn more in our latest feature in the Calgary Herald and find out how you can get involved: https://bit.ly/3NwCF7s #HopeIsInYourHandsYYC #EndPoverty
