Have you signed the petition for a standalone National Child and Youth Homelessness and Housing Plan yet? Today is Youth Homelessness Matters Day; a day to raise awareness for youth homelessness and discuss innovative solutions to support the needs of young people experiencing homelessness. In 2023, 17,248 children and young people presenting alone needed a crisis bed, but only 1 in 2 were taken in. This Youth Homelessness Matters Day, we're campaigning with Yfoundations (as well as The Foyer Foundation, Social Futures and Youth Off The Streets) for the implementation of a standalone National Child and Youth Homelessness and Housing Plan. Children and young people require support models which differ from practices targeted towards adults. For homelessness to be rare, brief and non-recurring, the right care must be in place to ensure that young people are not placed in dangerous situations. Join us in signing the petition, because together we can end youth homelessness. https://lnkd.in/eXkyzz_E #YHMD2024

Did you know that over 38,000 young people aged 15–24 years presented alone to a homelessness service in 2022–23? Of these young people, almost half experienced mental ill-health and over one third experienced domestic and family violence. The majority of these young people were in need of short- or long-term accommodation and most were turned away due to a lack of capacity. These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face. Yesterday was Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD), a national day that was conceived in 1990 to raise awareness and public discussion about child and youth homelessness. Over the years, YHMD has grown into a national celebration of young people’s resilience and an important day of advocacy for sustainable and innovative solutions to support the needs of children and young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Sir David Martin Foundation's vision is for all vulnerable young people to have safety, hope and opportunity.

Youth homelessness is an urgent crisis, but a solvable problem. Here in Washington we have made significant strides in addressing unaccompanied youth and young adult homelessness since adopting a collaborative, multi-sector, statewide effort launched in 2016. A new report released by the Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA presents a roadmap and vision for Washington state and outlines key findings including a 40% reduction in unaccompanied youth and young adult homelessness since 2016. There is still much work to be done, but this report shows the power of public-private partnership to address big challenges. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gh7Ffh2k

The Q Shelter platform explains that ‘ending homelessness’ essentially means a future experience of homelessness would be brief, rare, and non-recurring. It is the universally accepted definition of responsive and resilient housing systems that solve and prevent problems with a people-first approach. An increased focus on prevention is necessary in order to end homelessness long term, including ongoing and further investments in: 🙌 Support programs to help people sustain their tenancies 🏡 More Supportive Housing, in key locations, for people experiencing significant vulnerability 🙌 Prevention of children’s exposure to adverse experiences, a cause of complex homelessness in later life 🏡 Integrated support for families and children so that children and young people do not experience homelessness at a young age 🙌 Ensuring enough homes to meet population needs, inclusive of social and affordable homes. We believe there should be a greater focus and investment in prevention and early intervention to prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place. A similar case being made in the back-end of this piece in The Courier-Mail today, as part of our State Election Platform launch, calling for a target to end homelessness before the 2032 Games. A new report from the Washington State Department of Commerce's Office of Homeless Youth and A Way Home WA shows that Washington's focused, multi-sector effort to address youth and young adult homelessness is working. A few highlights among the many findings: - 40 percent reduction in the number of youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in Washington state between 2016 and 2022. - 75 percent of youth and young adults permanently housed in 2020 retained stable housing two years later. - 15,338 unaccompanied YYA accessed the homelessness system in 2022. The report, which pairs comprehensive data analysis with perspectives from young people with lived experience, service providers, and other stakeholders, presents a roadmap for Washington where unstably housed young people can receive the help they need promptly within their community. As the youth voices highlighted in the report emphasize, there is so much more work to be done. But these findings show that even when faced with a problem as complex and dynamic as youth and young adult homelessness, progress is possible.

The report shows a 15% increase of unaccompanied youth in homeless shelters, or young people who were in a visibly unsheltered situation, on a single night in January, as compared with the previous year’s HUD data. And we know this does not paint the full picture of homelessness for children, youth, young adults and families. This data is a reminder that though youth homelessness is less visible than adult homelessness, the problem continues to exist. https://lnkd.in/dR9QKuE5

Today is National Youth Homelessness Matters day & we call on all Australians to join us in making ‘unaccompanied’ children & young people experiencing, or at risk of experiencing homelessness, a priority for our Federal Government. Unaccompanied children & young people (15 to 25) make up nearly 1/3rd of our homeless population- in 22/23 that was 39,000 unaccompanied children & young people either sleeping rough, couch surfing or experiencing unsafe or insecure living conditions. And these numbers ONLY represent the children/ young people who accessed the Speacialist Homelessness Services system. This #YHMD we ask you to help us elevate these children & young people’s voice, validate their experiences & prioritise solutions designed specifically for them through the development of a standalone National Child & Youth Homelessness Plan. Sign the Yfoundations petition https://lnkd.in/gAPjU-aQ and tell our government that our community stands with these children & young people. Our systems have failed them- we cannot afford too. A recent study reveals that more children live in homelessness nationwide than in most individual states. This highlights a critical issue impacting our youngest and most vulnerable. Addressing this crisis is essential to ensure every child has a stable and safe place to call home. Learn more about the findings and what can be done to help at https://heyor.ca/8uaf2z.

Youth Homelessness is a complex issue - and it's not just a housing problem. Youth homelessness is so much more than not having somewhere to sleep. Young homeless people usually have complex needs and need to be supported with more than just accommodation to move on from homelessness. We believe that the only way to end homelessness is to start by ending youth homelessness. That's because many people who are sleeping on the streets today were homeless when they were younger as well. We have to step in early and support the homeless young people of today to prevent them from becoming the homeless people of tomorrow.
