Although the LGBTQ+ community can experience higher rates of intimate partner violence, the first statewide study of Orders of Protection in South Carolina found that of the 2377 cases reviewed from 2019, only 22 were filed by same sex partners. Remembering #WorldAIDSDay ❤️Reflecting on all those lost and the demonisation/pain of entire minority communities from the 1980s.❤️ 1️⃣Stigma has reduced significantly in high income countries but still remains an issue in different nations globally. 2️⃣HIV prevention and treatment has came along way since the first test was developed in mid 1980s. 3️⃣For a person living with HIV: Antiretroviral therapy with effectice adherence is 99% effective at reducing the risk of the virus being passed on: U-U undetectable~untransmittable. 4️⃣Someone living with HIV who uses on ARV and is undetectable lives as long as someone without HIV. 5️⃣For a person not living with HIV: PrEP or pre-exposure prophylaxis (an ARV medication) with effective adherence reduces the risk of them contracting HIV by up to 99%. 📢These are great advances but more work is needed in global equality to reduce HIV stigma that continues to affect minority communities.📢

June is PRIDE month, and protecting LGBTQ+ youth from the risks involved with substance-use disorder (SUD) and addiction is paramount. According to SAHMSA, about one third of bisexual males, bisexual females, and gay males had an SUD in the past year. About one fourth of lesbian females had an SUD in the past year. These are just a few proven steps you can take to help prevent substance-use disorder in LGBTQ+ youth, whether you are an educator, service-provider, or just a friend. According to The Trevor Project, LGBTQ+ youth are at risk because of a lack of acceptance, understanding, empathy, and compassion. That lack comes at a great cost: a national survey conducted in 2023 found 41% of LGBTQ+ youth have seriously considered suicide in the last year.
