Last week, it was a privilege and honor to participate in a unique event where Breakthrough Energy united leading organizations worldwide committed to decarbonizing our energy systems. During one of the best climate energy presentations I've ever attended, delivered by Prof. Eric Toone, I thought about how current grid capacity could be utilized with electrochemical direct air capture to accelerate the grid's decarbonization. More than 20 startups, including RepAir Carbon Capture, Verdox, Carbon Atlantis, Carbon Utility, E-quester, Greenlyte Carbon Technologies, CO2CirculAir, Blaze Carbon, Carbominer, Mission Zero Technologies, Atlas Materials, Capture6, Carbon To Stone, EDAC Labs, Parallel Carbon, Planetary, Travertine, Captura, Ebb Carbon, SeaO2, PRONOE are utilizing Electrochemistry CDR, all of which can benefit from the existing extra energy capacity in the grid that isn't being used today. That's about 8,100 TWh of extra energy capacity not utilized due to a lack of demand. Electrochemical direct air capture can play a significant role in using this unused capacity to decarbonize the grid more quickly. I've attached an article reviewing the potential of leveraging this unused capacity with electrochemical direct air capture. Using that energy with RepAir Carbon Capture would reduce 6 gigatonnes of CO2 annually without adding solar panels or wind turbines. Sorry, but this is crazy 🙀 .
