Climate Change and Sustainability Researcher @KPMG | Global Management of Natural Resources Masters UCL
Reflections and New Beginnings in Sustainability: Insights from a Master's Graduate to a New Professional Time flies—it’s already been a year since I completed my master’s degree. Today, I want to reflect on my journey into sustainability, the experiences I had during my studies, and share some observations as I transitioned from university to the professional world. I hope this resonates with those of you aspiring to pursue a career in sustainability. ✨ Why I Chose Sustainability As an undergraduate in Business Administration, I was first introduced to the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) through a sustainability program offered by my department. I later worked on a short-term project where I assisted an NGO with their sustainability report. That was the moment I realized how crucial these issues were, and I became determined to make a positive impact on the world! 🎓 Master’s Studies: A Journey of Exploration During my master's, I explored diverse topics like the true environmental impact of renewable energy and the depletion of oil and gas resources. I even visited mining sites in Australia and Finland, which challenged my preconceived notions—these sites were far more breathtaking than I imagined. 💼 Transitioning to the Workplace Returning to Taiwan, I started searching for sustainability-related jobs, eager to apply my knowledge. However, I often encountered questions during interviews like: “Sustainability is such a broad field—what’s your unique advantage?” And comments like: “Many fresh graduates enter this field with high hopes, but aligning with market needs is key.” In the UK, sustainability consulting is often categorized into specific themes, with specialized roles in areas like water, energy, or regulations. In Taiwan, job postings tend to be labeled more broadly with terms like "sustainability" or "climate change," often without specifying a preferred academic background. This can be both an opportunity and a challenge. 🌱 Looking Forward with Determination As a fresh graduate, I’ve had moments of self-doubt and questioned my original aspirations. But despite the challenges, I haven’t given up. I firmly believe that sustainability has a bright future, and I’m committed to continuing my journey in this field. #永續 #畢業新鮮人 #面試 #sustainability #environment #graduates #interview

🔸 Research Careers and Research Assessment at EU Level: A Path to Sustainable Excellence 🔸 Today, Europe faces significant socio-political and economic challenges. Increasing global competition, geopolitical tensions, and an era dominated by technological advancements and artificial intelligence require a robust and dynamic response. At the heart of this response lie researchers, who are the backbone of the research and innovation system. They are crucial to maintaining the continent’s competitive edge and transforming research potential into solutions that improve the lives of citizens and support industries and businesses in Europe and beyond. Their role is also essential in understanding and implementing the systemic transformations required for more sustainable futures. This calls for a serious reconsideration of the choices made with respect to recruitment, performance expectations and assessment, the industrialised publication culture, wellbeing management, and more. Strengthening research careers is a must for addressing global societal challenges and accelerating the green and digital twin transition.
