Check out the fourth installment in our video series "HRP Statistics Portal". Have you ever wondered how to create a hypothesis to answer a specific research question? A hypothesis enables researchers to define and test their assumptions, laying the groundwork for drawing meaningful conclusions about a phenomenon. Hypothesis testing, based on careful observation or experimentation, is vital for establishing statistical and scientific significance. Knowing which type of hypothesis to use to answer a specific research question is fundamental. The video "Hypothesis Testing in Research: Navigating the Path From Theory to Discovery" highlights the key elements of hypothesis testing and showcases different types of hypotheses using real-world examples from HRP research studies in sexual and reproductive health and rights (#SRHR). Yesterday, I attended a Community Talk organised by #VLIR-UOS on Improving Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health through a Participatory Parent-Child Communication Intervention with findings from Ugand and gathered the following takeaways an opinions: Discussion on Improving Improving adolescent sexual and reproductive health is a crucial aspect of promoting the overall well-being and development of young people. One effective approach to achieving this is through participatory caregiver-child communication. Engaging parents and caregivers in open and non-judgmental discussions about sexuality and reproductive health can have a significant impact on adolescents' knowledge, behavior, and decision-making. When young people have access to accurate information, feel supported, and can discuss their concerns or questions, they are more likely to make informed choices and engage in healthier sexual behaviors. some strategies to enhance participatory parent-child communication for adolescent sexual and reproductive health are: 1. Education and awareness 2. Creating a safe and non-judgmental environment; 3. Using diverse communication methods 4. Encouraging active participation 5. Tailoring communication to cultural and individual contexts 6. Building trust and confidentiality 7. Involving other trusted adults 8. Reinforcing positive messaging 9. Providing resources and support 10. Starting early In conclusion, by promoting participatory parent-child communication, we can create a supportive environment that equips adolescents with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions, protect their sexual health, and develop healthy relationships. #srh #srhr #adolescenthealth #globalgoals #adolescentmentalhealth #sexualhealth

5 Strategies to Engage Adolescents in Sexual and Reproductive Health Education Engaging adolescents in conversations about sexual and reproductive health can be challenging, yet it’s essential. Here are five effective strategies to foster understanding and openness: 📌 Incorporate Storytelling Storytelling, whether personal or shared experiences, can resonate deeply with adolescents. It helps them see that you understand their challenges and experiences. By sharing relatable stories, you create a space where they feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their concerns. 📌Utilize Relatable Icons or Role Models According to the social cognitive theory, individuals learn by observing and imitating others. To enhance engagement, introduce adolescents to role models or icons they admire. Using these relatable figures can make the learning process more impactful. 📌Leverage Peer Influence Peer influence is a powerful motivator. I recall a time in my youth when sharing my experiences with friends led to open and honest conversations about sexual health. This is why our organization prioritizes training adolescents and youth leaders. One leader, for example, shared how she educated her peers on sexual harassment after noticing inappropriate behavior in her classroom. Empowering adolescents to educate one another fosters a peer-driven learning environment. 📌 Integrate Technology Today’s adolescents are constantly connected to their devices. To reach them effectively, meet them where they are; whether through apps, social media, or other digital platforms. Providing accurate, engaging content in these spaces ensures that they receive the information they need. 📌Offer Mentorship Mentorship can have a profound impact on an adolescent’s life. I recall my own experience with a mentor during my teenage years; a guiding figure who provided a safe space for me to navigate my thoughts and feelings. Her non-judgmental support helped me make informed decisions and confidently navigate adolescence. Being a mentor who listens and offers guidance can make all the difference. As professionals and advocates in this field, it’s crucial to explore and implement these strategies within our spheres of influence. Let’s work together to ensure that adolescents have the knowledge and support they need to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health. I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you engage adolescents in these critical conversations? Share your insights in the comments. #SexualHealth #ReproductiveHealth #AdolescentHealth

Newly published research findings on sexual and reproductive health literacy needs of young adolescents. An area in sexual and reproductive health that has received little scholarship. This research was done in the Effutu Municipality in the Central region. The findings show that young adolescents have poor knowledge of the concepts of sexual and reproductive health and its essential domains. Abstinence was the predominant sexual and reproductive health goal of the participants. Yet, many males admitted to having sexual partners. The study also found that adolescents have difficult linguistic and physical access to structured and safe information on sexual and reproductive health. See the link below for detailed findings. https://lnkd.in/dAmnRkqh #planinternationalghana #UNFPA #PPAG #UNICEF

Public Health and Program Management Strategist and Youth Development Specialist in Education, Health and Community Sectors
Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) My subject matter expertise on the topic spans 17 years of working directly with HIV-positive individuals, prison rape survivors and students, to mention a few. In addition, I've worked extensively with public and private sector individuals and organizations, within the Health, Education and Community sectors, locally and internationally. SRHR is not just a basic human right, but it's a life skill! And this is not only confined to adolescents and youth. If we want our campaigns, programs, interventions, and messaging on the topic to have an impact, then we need to answer the question "Why is this life skill (SRHR) so important?" I've attended workshops where males were vilified when rape is discussed. Yet, we know that "not all men are trash." Respect between the sexes is essential, for many reasons but in the context of SRHR, this has to be a significant component of any program, intervention and campaign. SRHR is difficult, and controversial for some to talk about. However, we cannot deny human sexuality, and the hallmark of a successful intervention, program and campaign is reflected in how meaningful SRHR as a life skill is to its audience.

Interested in knowing why and how to create an #evidencegapmap? Interested in #sexual and #reproductive #health and #rights? Join our webinar/workshop on 23 April! This workshop is a condensed version of 3ie’s Introduction to Evidence Gap Maps (EGM) course using the example of the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) EGM. Adapted to the needs of World Health Organization #EVIPnet members, it will provide participants with a practical application of the steps involved in producing EGMs, including scoping, searching, data extraction, and analysis. While users may not be able to create a map on their own after such a short course, it will strengthen their basic skills and competencies in using and producing EGMs to inform research agendas and programmatic decision-making. At the end of the webinar, participants working in or interested in SRHR will be invited to participate in a follow-up session to help prioritize topics for evidence synthesis and gauge interest in collaborating on spin-off research projects. Participants will also be provided a participation certificate 👉 Register here: https://lnkd.in/guCNksqv

I want to share our new publication, a book chapter with Professor Macleod entitled "The nexus between COVID-19 and sexual and reproductive health of adolescents: Bringing adolescents ‘home’". We are saying lets be at 'home' with adolescents as sexual beings, in the home. Its not just about providing services and resources that we shall ensure their sexual and reproductive health, it is about our collective and positive attitude toward the adolescent and their emerging sexual identity. https://lnkd.in/dFEyN6Gb

Exploring Parent-Adolescent Communication: Sexual and Reproductive Health in Robe Town, Ethiopia. Investigating Factors Influencing Discussions Between Parents and Secondary/Preparatory School Students on SRH Matters. In Ethiopia, adolescents face increasing sexual and reproductive health challenges due to limited parent-child communication and early sexual activity. This study in Robe Town, Southeast Ethiopia, surveyed 394 secondary and preparatory school students to understand parent-adolescent discussions on sexual health. Findings reveal that only 47% of students discussed sexual matters with their parents, with higher rates among older students, females, and those living with both parents. Students often preferred discussing with peers due to parental discomfort and lack of communication skills. Comprehensive family education programs and peer support networks are needed to improve adolescent sexual health communication. https://lnkd.in/grnUB-6g #GlobalHealth #PublicHealth #HealthForAll #Healthcare #GlobalWellness #HealthPolicy
