Don’t miss the U.S. Department of Labor Center of Excellence presentation, How the Investing in America Agenda Can Provide Registered Apprenticeship Pathways for Opportunity Youth at the Southeastern Employment and Training Association (SETA) 2024 Spring Conference on March 11th. The Investing in America Agenda represents a historic commitment to #workforce development with hundreds of billions of dollars earmarked for our nation's infrastructure, semiconductor industry, and renewable energy sector over the coming years. This substantial investment will necessitate the training of millions of new workers in innovative industries to fill these roles. Join us to hear about the core elements of the Investing in America Agenda, what opportunities exist related to how States can utilize funding opportunities to support registered apprenticeship, and how organizations can collaborate to support the implementation of the Agenda while also supporting Opportunity Youth. https://bit.ly/3IeL5gP

As part of my annual spring tour of colleges, this past week I visited Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont. I'd lived in Bennington briefly about 20 years ago, but had never actually visited Bennington College until this year. Bennington is a small college of about 730 students with a charming campus filled with eclectic and thoughtfully constructed learning and living spaces. What stands out to me most about Bennington is its innovative curriculum. Rather than declare a traditional major, Bennington students develop an academic plan focusing on a single, challenging, often interdisciplinary intellectual problem or question. Students then embark upon an ambitious research process, including multiple internships, classes, and tutorials, culminating in a 30-60 page research paper as well as some sort of public-facing presentation or performance. Similar to a dissertation committee, a committee of faculty members works closely with each student to hone their research questions, ask questions of their own, provide feedback and support, and help direct the student toward opportunities after they graduate. Many Bennington students go on to graduate school to continue and deepen their research pursuits. It is an innovative, rigorous, and inquiry-driven approach to undergraduate studies, and the students I spoke to were extremely excited about the projects they had embarked upon. The type of student most likely to succeed at Bennington is someone who is, or aspires to be, self driven in their intellectual pursuits, who does not expect a uniform or cookie-cutter design to their program of study. Students enrolling at Bennington don't necessarily need to be natural leaders among their peers, but they do need to be community minded. Bennington students are generally oriented toward helping to make the world a better place, and are people seeking to use their educational experiences to make a difference. What's a master's degree in Educational Policy and Leadership Studies (Higher Education & Student Affairs concentration) from the University of Iowa College of Education without practical application? Aside from the practicum opportunities, internships, capstone [projects], and research exposure that the HESA program at the University of Iowa exposes you to, writing opinion pieces and advising policy-makers on how to improve the status of higher education and college student support are other ways you are prepared to become a relevant student affairs professional. I invite you to read my conversation with the Vanguard Newspaper on how the Nigerian government can enhance higher education with student-centric reforms, proper investments, and more. https://lnkd.in/djKx9xq5

Leadership Coaching and Training for Ph.D. Scientists and Engineers | Former Chief Innovation Officer | Author | Speaker
My first internship was when I was sophomore in college. It was at a Texaco natural gas plant in Alabama. When I arrived, I had to stay in the front office with the admins and engineers until the regional safety director from Houston trained me and cleared me to go out into the plant. 🦺The safety director, a gentleman who was exactly what you’d expect from an oil man from Texas (cowboy hat, boots, huge belt buckle, and a mouth full of tobacco) arrived and gave me some reading materials and a presentation. On his way out he said, 🤿“Before I let you back there, I need to know you can put on this SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) and walk out here to the rally point”. So he showed me how to put it on. Then I put it on and took it off by myself. 😰(Admittedly, it was hard. I was not prepared to walk around with a 30 lb gas cylinder on my back!) “All righty”, he said. 🏭🏭(Woot, I was excited…I’ll finally get to go where the action is!) “Do that every day for the next two weeks and when I get back I’ll check you and clear you to go back into the plant”. (Every day for 2 weeks!?) 😟😣I don’t know if I said anything, but the look on my face must have betrayed my thoughts. Because he spit his tobacco on the ground, looked at me, and said, 💡“Young lady, if you want to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to pee in the tall grass. I’m not letting you back there until I know you’ll be safe. So what’s it gonna be?”. 💪🏾So I took a deep breath and put the SCBA back on. He seemed satisfied with that so he said “See ya”. 🎉🏭Two weeks later he came back and I was good to go! ➡️25 years later, every time I come up against a challenge that I don’t want to undertake because I think it will be hard or uncomfortable, I remind myself, 🐕🐕“If you want to run with the big dogs, you’ve got to pee in the tall grass”. What is your tall grass today? #innovation #entrepreneurship #engineering #leadership #management #personaldevelopment
