Our new paper: What Will Happen in the First Space Hostage Crisis? – September, 2024 Gordon Roesler - Marc Feldman - Patrick Lin While the concept may seem far-fetched, there is a high probability that malicious actors will take hostages in space in the near future. The growth of space as a commercial sector and critical military area of operations makes such an incident almost inevitable. Given current US policies, capabilities, jurisdictional conflicts, and force structures, however, such an event will likely lead to sub-optimal crisis handling by the US government. This paper explores the potential for hostage-taking in space and the deficiencies of existing countermeasures and incident response processes—along with possible solutions that can avert the worst outcomes in the future. https://lnkd.in/erJXakB4

ALL EYES UP! Space is our moral (and mortal) responsibility. Safe Passage is a solved problem set. It is a known known. Unfortunately, it is understood to only a select few, unclear to many, and unknown to most. Misunderstanding is causing missed opportunities. WE cannot afford a miscalculation. Space is every joint warfighter’s AOR. Beyond integrating space products, utilities, and services as key strategic advantages for national security, it is time to broadly institutionalize defensive and offensive space operations and effects as acknowledged traditional military activities for national defense. From Competition to Crisis to Conflict: WE must ensure delivery of Spacepower effects to the Joint Force, the Nation, and our Allies through Gray Zone asymmetries … WE must protect and defend Spacepower projection assets through Dynamic Space Operations … and WE must prevail over any Space-enabled attack against the Joint Force through resilient Tactically Responsive Space options. Set conditions, Secure the frontline, Shape the future. WE must always be able to Advance – Adapt – Augment for assured astro access and action. A skill-web will unweave their kill-web. This is how WE stratify the Stratosphere. In testimony to the Senate Armed Services subcommittee, U.S. defense officials stressed the importance of increased investment in space capabilities to retain #SpaceDominance. John D. Hill and Gen. Michael A. Guetlein warned of growing threats from China and Russia, prompting the Pentagon to allocate $33.7 billion in its 2025 budget for space programs. Key priorities include #SatelliteCommunications, #MissileWarningSystems, and collaboration with allies. Moreover, the integration of #CommercialSpaceTechnologies is critical to strengthening the nation's defense architecture, ensuring resilience and #NationalSecurity against emerging #counterspace threats. The urgency for action stems from adversaries' efforts to close the space dominance gap, necessitating continued investment in innovation and joint-force capabilities to safeguard national security. https://lnkd.in/eFtQg_8b #SpaceWarfare #SpaceForce #USDefense #InnovationInSpace #StrategicInvestments #SpaceResilience #SatelliteCommunications #MissileWarningSystems #DefenseBudget2025 #USAllies #InteroperabilityInSpace #CounterSpaceCapabilities #SpaceSecurity #SpaceArchitecture

Reflexive criticism of a Space National Guard does indeed display ignorance of the facts: 1. The Space National Guard is the most cost effective option for our Guard members currently performing space missions. 2. The Space National Guard would be the most seamless solution on what to do with the Air National Guard units performing space missions. https://lnkd.in/eu5p_Ygn

"After being identified as a warfighting domain in its own right, space is now becoming the latest focus for the intelligence agencies supporting Department of Defense (DOD) operations," writes Scott King. Because of this, the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) has evolved into a much broader Space Domain Awareness (SDA). Although not a particularly new development in terminology, it does blur the lines between intelligence and operations—which is where "operational intelligence" comes into play. These days, operational intelligence is essential. After all, how are you supposed to carry out military operations if you don't have a good understanding of the threat landscape? SDA requires understanding of mission and capabilities far beyond awareness of the "situation" of order of battle. If you want to learn more about operational intelligence and the role that Elara Nova plays in supporting the adoption of new and emerging technologies, be sure to check out the full article: https://lnkd.in/g-6Tfupt #SpaceDomainAwareness #SpaceNews #USSF

In today's Defence Supplement in the Australian I write about the importance of Defence Australia developing a Space Control capability that is timely and credible, and consistent with Australia's international obligations towards space sustainability and international legal agreements. I also note the importance of government fully supporting sovereign space launch to support Defence space missions, including responsive space lift for augmentation and reconstitution of essential space support capabilities in a crisis. I argue that Space must be given a higher profile in the 2026 National Defence Strategy and Integrated Investment Program. https://lnkd.in/gWQFgtTx

I gave detailed comments to Peter Suciu at ClearanceJobs about the #Trump administration's decision to move #USSpaceForce #HQ to #Alabama. Aside from the #Politics, I discuss why Alabama could actually be an optimal place for USSPACECOM, given that for years prior to the final #Biden decision to house the Space Force in Colorado Springs, Alabama has actually been positioning itself for #military and #space #infrastructure and worked to attract private and government talent and related industries. I also addressed how the move would tie into #DonaldTrump's interests in providing #economic opportunities to overlooked areas in the country as well as the general trend to decentralize US government agencies and to diversify areas that could cooperate with the #nationalsecurity and #defense agencies.

The Irregular Warfare Center (IWC) published its first edited volume, "The Future Faces of Irregular Warfare: Great Power Competition in the 21st Century," including chapters by CISA Professors, Dr. Thomas Marks, JSOMA Department Chair Dr. Christopher Marsh, and Dr. Sean McFate, PhD and former CISA Professor Dr. David H. Ucko. Dr. Marks and Dr. Ucko set the stage for the book with their chapter, “Defining Irregular Warfare: Legitimacy, Violence, and Politics.” They discuss the challenges of reorienting policy, doctrine, and practice away from the armed (emphasis in original) aspects of irregular warfare, for a U.S. military that naturally gravitates towards the kinetic aspects of conflict. Dr. McFate then offers a provocative treatise on what he suggests is the “Maginot Line” ethos driving U.S. defense policy. The United States, suggests McFate, is still planning for and building formations and equipment to fight and win the Second World War, albeit with 21st-century technology, while failing to address the realities of modern warfare, or conflict fought through other means. Dr. Marsh (JSOMA) provides his excellent and timely observations on the current state of Russian irregular warfare. His perspective that Russia’s approach towards irregular warfare is a function of both means and ways should be of particular interest. In his comparative study of Western and Russian approaches to irregular warfare, Marsh finds the latter has had a more holistic view of the subject for historical and operational reasons, comprising as it does a “special” way of war. ✅ Thursday is for Books and for reading… 🚨 Article: The West Must Study the Success of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces Author: Doug Livermore (Atlantic Council) 🔥 This article is a must-read for anyone studying modern warfare, as Doug Livermore highlights how Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces (SOF) have leveraged operational preparation of the environment (OPE) to outmaneuver a larger adversary. Instead of relying solely on traditional direct-action raids, Ukrainian SOF have shaped the battlefield in advance—disrupting logistics, establishing intelligence networks, and pre-positioning resources long before kinetic engagements begin. 🧨 Livermore underscores how these unconventional tactics have forced Russian forces into defensive reactions, allowing Ukraine to gain asymmetric advantages despite being outnumbered and outgunned. The ability to conduct deep reconnaissance, integrate intelligence with precision strikes, and use sabotage operations effectively has turned Ukraine’s SOF into a force multiplier. 💣 For Western militaries, the lesson is clear: future conflicts will be won not just by firepower, but by those who control the battlespace before combat even begins. This article is essential reading for defense professionals, policymakers, and SOF practitioners looking to refine their approach to irregular warfare in an era of near-peer competition. 📰 Link for the article in the comments section.
